Just a shout out to any parents of Express (G3) or NA (G2) kids, if u are looking for exam/academic resources or just want to connect with a similar community (i seriously could not find any active parents from Express here on KSP), please drop me a PM to find out more. We have a FB group of >100 parents (and some tutor-parents) sharing tips and resources. Mostly for lower sec but we will extend to upper sec soon. Cheers!

      Hi hi

Its end of P1 for the dragon babies. Wanna start discussion on PSLE. Anyone keen in starting??
Hello! I’m following your thread, since I have a Dragon year nephew.

How has P1 been for your child?

My nephew seems to have enjoyed a relaxed P1 with no exams.

    • RE: Overseas Uni funds preparation

@bbbay I don’t think there is a pay gap, but it’s probably easier for a graduate of a reputable university (local or foreign) to find a job in a market flooded with graduates.

If one is working in a technical job, there’s probably no difference in ability to do the job (between a local or overseas grad). However, in MNCs, and in networking roles, I often find that having studied or lived in xyz country before, sometimes immediately opens up a common topic of bonding with overseas clients/associates. This is the intangible aspect even though it may not immediately translate into bigger earnings into one’s pocket.

      Just to kaypoh a bit…

The 2 most popular and reputable schools in the Northwest are BPGH and Swiss Cottage.

Has anyone done a comparison of both schools before? Please share the considerations if your child had to choose between the two.

Based on personal & friends' sharing over the decade, it is quite common for schools to look at overall results in sec 2. Some schools excluded music & PE (letter grade instead of marks in lower sec) as they do not offer them as an Olevels subjects.

Most will set minimum criteria to take up certain subjects so my guess is that this particular school is trying to assign a ranking score by giving double weightage to maths & sci instead of a 2-step evaluation for each affected subject.

Perhaps you would like to check w the school or senior parents in that school whether it is something new (then more room for negotiation) or has it been this way all along?

Usually I would suggest to find out more about sec 3 subject combination during sec sch open houses. We were disappointed previously when the school was unable to open a class for my child's favorite (& somewhat critical to his post sec ed in terms of portfolio) subject due to lack of interested students in his stream that year & had to compromise ourselves to fit into the school's \"combo menu\", taking an \"irrelevant\" subject.
At least we had tried our best to do our due diligence. 🤷
Our school has just changed a new principal this year, so i dunno if this 12-subject calculation is new. In any case, this system seems to benefit my child because he is quite an all-rounder in the 12 subjects (none too terrible), and also he doesn’t meet what other schools set eg min A2 to take A maths and pure sciences.

Schools will always have a caveat that the combi allocated will be dependent on merit first, and then whether there is sufficient demand/resources. Perhaps my child’s preferred combi (also not a popular one) will eventually not be granted, so…we’ll see…

Happy to report that my child got his preferred combi of 8 subjects (2L, 2M, 2S, and 2 humanities). Indeed the 12-subject calculation benefitted him (I asked him to give his best in all of them, not neglecting any, and he did). And also he had tuition for math & science (all along his weakest).

I hate that the sg system is so heavily weighted on STEM, but looking back i have no regrets that i paid for the math & science tuition. Even if all we wanted was the ability to choose his preferred 2 humanities 🙄

    • RE: DSA 2024

@Nanzzlim actually the way the sports trials are conducted are really quite strange. Logically it should be a proper match or competition where they pick the top 3 scorers/winners. Isn’t that how sports (including Olympics) works?

It’s weird how the PSLE is a one-off chance for the kids to enter schools via S1 posting. But DSA sports trials are not objectively selecting the top 3 winners (but rather, deferring to the coaches’ subjective judgement on who is a “better” overall long-term player that has “potential” to win C div for the school). Hearsay some badminton trials are like just coach walking around while the kids spar with the senior players. Not even a full match with points.

    • RE: DSA 2024

@EarlGrey019 in previous DSA threads (unfortunately lost forever because of the ksp server change) there were parents who noticed the sports trials were quite fishy, seemed like the coach is not even looking at the kids’ performance during the matches to assess them. As if already made up his mind who he’s gonna recommend. Well this basketball case is probably just the tip of the iceberg. Other sports have such tales too, just whether there’s sufficient evidence to prosecute only. The parent managed to get a voice recording of the phone call in this one.

@Raajbeary If u are aware of & ok with him not having any LEAPS 2.0 bonus points, then u can probably inform the school of your decision via a formal email.

It’s actually very common for students not to get their preferred CCA. Most schools will request the student to at least attend their allocated CCA for one year before permitting a switch.

Call the retail shop (or walk in) to enquire. They are extremely experienced in advising what to buy for every school.
