Here are some advice/procedures for reference:
1. 审题 analyze the question and understand what it's looking out for
- e.g. 如何...... /怎么样才能...... type of questions requires you to state the methods/process/procedures, whereas
为何....../有什么好处 type of questions requires you to state the reasons/benefits/consequences
2. (Based on the direction from step 1) Start looking out for 6 - 8 relevant pointers, as content component for 片段缩写 is worth 8 marks and each marks is usually worth 1 mark each. Do not worry too much about the word count at this point in time. Otherwise, there is a possibility/tendency that you might leave out important content.
3. Make a quick word count on the (6-8) pointers you found. It should be ~100-110++. If it exceeds 120 words, then chances are, there are redundant pointers in what you search for in step 2. In that case, instead of proceeding to reduce the word count, you should re-evaluate those pointers you found and omit 1-2 of them.
4. When you try to reduce the word count, prioritize language expression and try not to touch the content, otherwise you might end up losing marks from that content component (i.e. 8 out of 12). The students would have been taught how to do this, for example, 如果 can be minimized as 如 or 若,应该 —— 应,能够 —— 能 as well as the appropriate use of \", \" and \"、\"to connect pointers or sentence components.
5. Make sure what the question asked for is mentioned. For example, if the question is “如何面对失败”and you start immediately with “我们应该......”then, you failed to set/bring out the theme点题. This will affect the language expression/grammar component (i.e. 4 out of 12). Another area that may affect the grading for this component is inappropriate use of \",\" in an attempt to save word count. Sometimes, there's no choice but to start off listing out the pointer(s) in new sentences. -

Yes, \"面对失败,我们应该……\" is correct since it brings out the topic (as opposed to the wrong example I gave, \"我们应该……\"). -

For new Chinese O level syllabus (paper 2), under the 词语替换 section will they test more than 2 words 词语?
Eg. 我们要懂得\"开始\" 有益的意义

Or will they only test 2 words 词语?

For 词语替换 section, the students can be tested for both 2 or 4 word (i.e. idiom) phrases. For idiom, there's where the 135 必学成语 can come into place.
Ultimately there will only be 1 change in word from the phrase. In summary, students need to be familiar with 词语搭配 (e.g. 减轻---负担) and idioms. -
