      Wishing everyone a great 2025! How did 2024 end for you, and what are your plans for 2025?

      A big family milestone for us was the wedding of my younger daughter in Nov. We’re happy for her, but it’s a bit of an adjustment for the family. And it brings home how old I am getting!

      My office (a small non-profit) went into semi-dormant state over the past 3 weeks or so and staff were told to WFH. With more free time, I decided to use the time for a little “life-long learning” to prep for the year ahead using courses from LinkedIn Learning. These are paid courses, but NLB provides a link to sign in to do courses on LinkedIn Learning for free! These are own-time own-target courses, which are less rigid than SkillsFuture has become. If you’d like to try:
      https://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/main/linkedin.html

      So, over the past couple of weeks, I have listened to several beginner courses on PPT, Canva, Wix, website design, presentations, workshop facilitation… Quite a bit was stuff I have already picked up over the years, but it was good to have a more systematic review of the basics, and I did pick up a few new tips. And if you’re wondering why I picked these courses, it’s to prepare for what I hope/expect to be doing in future, based on the book I wrote and published end-2024 (https://tinyurl.com/Rooted-Resilient-Ready). I hope to be find opportunities to help more people understand the challenges that face Singaporean Third Culture Kids and how to help them, and work a bit more on the fledgling Singapore Third Culture Kids website. No firm plans yet.

      Starting next week, work at the non-profit and my other freelance work will pick up again, and I think my first quarter is going to be really busy! I may not have time to put any of this new knowledge into practice till the next lull, but I guess having a bit more knowledge and skills never goes amiss.

      What about everyone else?

        @slmkhoo Happy New Year to u slmkhoo! Glad to hear that you have so many happy and exciting events going on! Wishing u all the best for your book and your work.

        My new year’s eve was very quiet, just hubby and me watching movie at home & we slept early haha. Sooo introvert right. While the extrovert in the family was at his friend’s house for their countdown party.

        I am hoping for a new start in 2025. Will see how it goes; if it’s not in God’s will then i guess just back to the same old haha. Just giving thanks for good health, which I learnt in 2024 not to take for granted.

          @slmkhoo oh by the way, i remember u disliked the book “Lord of the Flies” for the degeneration of the boys into savages. Zac will be doing this lit text for O levels. I was likewise horrified when I read it (he was more critical of the author’s poor usage of dialogue as a tool). And he actually requested we watch Squid Game Season 1 over the Christmas break. I was again horrified at the senseless killings…but i think 15 is an ok age to be watching & discussing such mature themes. I recall there was some controversy over parents letting their preschool-primary school kids watch it when it first aired.

            @zac-s-mum I read Lord of the Flies when I was in sec school (about Sec 2/3?)- I was horrified! But it’s an OK age to read it, I think. Especially if they have someone to talk about it with them. It’s not too young to realise that man is not naturally inclined to good and unselfishness (original sin), and that civilisation (and religion) help people control and work towards overcoming those natural behaviours.

                @slmkhoo

                2025 is a milestone for my family too. This year
                my triplets, 2 of them have started their journey “from boys to men” (enlisted for their national services) and the girl has started to “feed herself” (I told her she has to learn to earn her living these few months) until she starts Uni. Certainty more “peace” at home now.

                I will start to plan for my semi retirement if everything goes as planned. For me, semi retirement means more financial and mental freedoms. Less cravings and aversions. More peace.

                May all be happy and peaceful.

                  @bbbay wow triplets!

                  my younger one also completed JC2 last year and yes I cannot help but look forward to being able to plan for retirement. Working life is rather stressful these days - endless changes to cope with.

                    @bbbay How can Semi - Retirement means more financial freedoms?? I only can have more financial freedom when I am on a full time job.

                      @slmkhoo Congratulations! Your dd2 has started her new stage of life and having a partner to take care of her. Any plan to have a “Snake” grandchild?

                        @zac-s-mum I studied “Lord of the Flies” when I was in O level and even today, I still compare what have happened in the current world with those characters and the plot in the story. If Zac is interested in current world political issues, he should be able to manage the main theme of the story.
