        It's not a trick question.

        |---------------26km-----------------|
        |----12km400m----|----------------|
        A`````````````B``````````C

        Tom travelled from Town A to Town B
        From Town A to Town B = 12km 400m

        then returned to Town A

        From Town B to Town A = 12km 400m

        before going to Town C

        From Town A to Town C = 26km

        TOTAL DISTANCE TRAVELLED:
        12km400m + 12km400m + 26km = 50km 800m

            Hi,

            Anyone can solve this:

            Ali spent 1/3 of his saving on a pen. He spent 1/4 of the remainder on a book. If he had $38 left, how much he have at the beginning ?

            :welcome:

            Dear Parents,

            Are you frustrated/stuck when helping your child solve his/her Maths questions? Are you inclined to use Algebra most of the time? Do you have difficulty trying to use diagrams or other heuristic methods (that Primary School students learn) to solve?

            :idea: Post your questions here and see how MathsGuru solve them to the best of her ability. Detailed solutions will be posted back in this thread.

            So start asking and watch this space!!

            Cheers :celebrate: ,

                Ali's Savings:
                [/////][-----][-----]
                [Pen ][remainder]

                1/4 of 2 units = 1/2 unit
                Redraw the model:
                [///][///][---][---][---][---]
                [--pen--][---remainder---]
                ```````[bk ]
                Now, 1/4 of the remainder is used to buy a book.
                Which means the Ali has a total of 6 units in savings and has 3 units left.
                3 units = $38
                6 units = $38 x 2 = $76
                        1. Nigel has $145. He donated 2/5 to charity. Of the remainder, he gave 1/6 to his sister. How much did he give to his sister ?
