Hi, I’m new here…am keen to enrol my 4yo girl to CMA at Chongpang centre. Any kind soul can refer me and also enlighten me about the centre. Thanks!

SHe is going to be 5 years old & also attending class at ChongPang branch!! around 1 month already..so far, she enjoys her lessons, but need supervision & encouragement to do the homework..but though there's homework, she still looks forward to attend the class

She's under Teacher Wei..find her quite patient with kids & also parents..she will explain to parents on the child's weaknesses & how is the homework to be done very patiently..& if the homework is not finished, she will request the kid to stay back to finish(which I personnally is quite impressed, coz it's important for the child to progress & I didn't expect her to do this 'extra' bit)..& I think getting on this CMA route, teacher & parents play a very important part on the journey...

Please don't get me wrong. You are misinterpreting what I am trying to say. I am not saying it's the child's problem. I am just saying, at least she tries to do something about it and not just leaves the child alone.

I am not sure about your girl's teacher. The most basic requirement of being a trainer is patience and passion to teach. We want our students to bring back something that benefits them now and in future. We don't just deliver.

Anyway, I don't know your girl's teacher. Pardon me for being nosy in the first place.

Great. I started my kids in CMA about 3 months ago. Usually how long does it take to complete the course?

Btw,just fyi, & for the benefit of other parents, Chong Pang is main branch, where they train teachers for other branches..& the fees here is cheaper, at $250, every 10 lessons..whereas other branches charges $280..If I'm not wrong, Jurong East & Bishan also charge lower, at $250 think it's due to lower rental..

If your child is <5 years old, think they need to do an assesment, to check whether your child can follow instructions & also whether can write 1 to 10..
coz the homework require writing down answers,after counting using abacus
After the assessment, think you can request to attend 1 trial lesson(not sure if they still allow), for which they charge you 1 lesson's fee..after that, then you decide whether to sign up or not..but of course, depending on individual child, I feel that 1 lesson may not be enough to tell whether suitable or not

Do let your child try out, coz my girl is coming to 5 years old, & think I started her a bit late,after we realised she's very weak in her maths..hope we are still not too late

My gal is with CMA for the past 1+ year and she has progressed well. I agreed absolutely that parents need to put in the effort to coach the kid in order that the kid progress - it's the same with every other course or new things the kid learn. Thru'out the learning journey, there will be hills and valleys, and it's up to the parent to encourage the kid to climb thru' those hills and encourage them to pull themselves thru' the valleys. Learning cannot be fun all the way - that's my personal opinion. It can be fun at times, but it involves hard work too. The kid who is a true learner is the one that is able to motivate himself when the going gets tough (and initially, the parent has to do this when they are young).


I am not expecting my gal to finish the whole course of CMA - I do not need her to be a \"human calculator\". What I want to inculcate in her is the basic maths foundation (+-*/), a sensitivity to numbers and some discipline cum responsibility to focus and get work done within the allocated time. Every now and then thru'out this 1+ year, there are times whereby I can let go and she will progress, and there are times whereby I will have to step in again and put in the \"encouragement\" and \"enforce\" the discipline. I am not saying that CMA / abacus will suit all kids, but if the parents have the right expectation, this course is one that can help in \"training\" the kid's brain in certain aspect.

This is purely my personal experience and opinion, but I hope it helps some parents to set the right expectations.

Hope your boy is enjoying his classes. There is no fix end or completion of the course. There are 13 levels, level 13 is the lowest, level 1 highest. Beyond that still got duan wei su. I think to reach level 1 takes on average about 4 years. Can be longer or shorter depending on the child's progress. You can talk to your son's teacher to understand what the levels are about and how is it like.
