...Term 3 just started this week and when my girl took back her Spelling & 听写lists, I'm really speechless... chinese words like 开斋节, 屠妖节, 三块蛋糕, 五杯牛奶, 农历新年 etc etc... English spellings included words like Deepavali, Kavadi, Festivals, Catholic, Muslim, The Buddhist go to temple to pray etc etc...

K2 standard already so \"chim\", cannot imagine what to expect in P1... My mum already nagging that we should get a tutor for my daughter but hubby & me feel that it's really too early for her to have 1-to-1 tutoring. We would prefer to send her for enrichment classes where she gets to interact with classmates, which is also an important learning process too.
  I think your kid's kindergarten is really siao! I don't recall my son's P1 spelling list to be anywhere near that level of difficulty... and it's a SAP school some more.

Personally, I agree with your decision to stick to enrichment classes rather than one-on-one tutoring, which has a tendency to kill off any interest in the subject at that early age. Kids need to play to learn.

        Hi simplyjo,

Have you ever consider letting her taking enrichment classes from Tien-Xia (天下)? My gal had been there for a term and I can see improvements in her chinese language (in terms of identifying chinese characters and reading it aloud confidently). She had joined the class during T2 and we can see that she’s coping very well and she enjoys classes there, probably their methodology of teaching is on listen, speak, read, write, with some role play, singing, and games. She’s now going into Term 3 of K1.

The thing about this place is that at the end of each Term, they have a End-of-Term Parent-Children event/session where the students get to perform in front of fellow classmates as well as the parents. This help the child builds up their confidence. There’s also a Progress Report at the end of the Term as well.

Yup, we went to the Hougang branch yesterday. Their weekend classes are full so we are on wait list. Weekday nights would be very rush for us cos their evening class starts at 7.30pm.

Anyone heard of \"Han Language Center\"? Any comment to share?

Agree with chiefkiasu, P1 chinese is not chim like your current K2. Unless yours is child care centre. Reputable CCC’s curriculum is good for preparation to P1 but not kindergarten even good ones. My son currently in St James (ie since last July aka mid of K1. Previously was with Kinderland for 2 yrs). I found that St. James is not good enough, so I enrolled him in TienHsia last Nov for trying. I also enrolled him with Zoophonics from Aug ‘07. He is with TienHsia for half of this yr already. He looks forward to both chinese and phonics classes every week. Both centres’ administrators noted he always has smiles on his face on arrival.

As another forum mummy suggested, TienHsia is fun. It is not stressful. My son likes it at first lesson. He cried and refused to join when trial at Berries. Tingxie at TienHsia is 2 times per term (it is sentence, ex. this is a cow. I wash my hands before I eat) and much much easier (easier than Kinderland coz Kinderland already have writing from K1, ex. aeroplane, ship, your own name). It goes with the topic transport (K1), festivals (maybe K2) thats why I presume Kinderland may have those words you mentioned.

I have another girl at P5. She is also with TienHsia. At primary level, their teaching style is correct. And follow textbook syllabus. They are so good that their classes are always full.

I have visited a centre at Woodlands Causeway Point (maybe is Hua Language, always get mixed up Hua and Han) for primary level. I don’t like it. The chairs are facing the wall for all rooms. I don’t like education centre in the heart of shopping. Very rowdy. Civic Centre is okay, at least environment. Han Language should be there.

At this stage, cannot load them too much. Have to instil interest. TienHsia’s K1/K2 programme very good at this.

              Hi there,

              I am new here!

For your information, CGM after school care services is starting a Primary 1 prepartory class on 16 July. They have 2 timings, 9-11am or 11.30-2pm. Fees is $35 for a month. You can like to enrol your kid there. It is located near Choa Chu Kang. My gal is currently studying in the kindergarden there and I will be enrolling her for the class. Kinda worry for her when she start P1 next year.

                Hi simplyjo,

You may want to check out the branch in Jurong Entertainment Centre. There might be vacancies available. It actually shares the same compond with Morris Allen.

So if you're also considering for your daughter to take up English (or even Maths) enrichment classes, the centre serves all!!!

I've managed to enrol my girl into the Tien Hsia Hougang Branch on Sat afternoon, got to re-arrange all our weekend schedule to fit this class in. Went for make-up lesson today (cos we missed yesterday's class) and my girl likes the lesson, so that's a relief... 😉

Saw the Morris Allen Centre at Hougang too, and checked out their Maths classes as well. Looks like that they have quite good syllabus plan too. Unfortunately their only K2 lesson on weekend is on Sat morning 11am. My girl will be having Tien Hsia lesson on Sat 4.30pm, so not a good plan for another class that morning, got to give her some play/rest time. I'm not too worry of Maths & English cos I can guide in these 2 areas for the time being.

Wow, this really is a relief. Can understand how this feels.....

Know what, I am now looking for phonics K1 for my daughter. Have looked around in Jurong East Central area this afternoon and found Edu-point which actually provides phonics courses for K1 and 2. Gonna check it out at their website: http://www.edu-point.edu.sg and call them up to enquire more tomorrow.

Has anyone heard of this centre before, based on the outlook of the centre (closed today), it looks like this is not what they are specialised in.... Any other good recommendations for phonics courses around Jurong East area? My daughter used to be in Morris Allen but we stopped temporary as we feel that it is more important to get her basics right.

I nearly fainted when i read what are being posted on topics regarding how to prepare our children for P1. Realised that i am not KIASU enough!!!

Before i jumped onto the boat of helping my school to breeze thru P1 (2010). My question to myself now is "destination". In another word, which Primary school to enrol my son into?

Are there any areas that i should look into? Liked how the school performance in term of academic or what is it’s strength? By placing in a SAP school = STRESS ?? Is there a site that show how is the school being rank in term of national standard?

Have any parents heard of IB(International Baccalaureate)? Is MOE moving in that direction for primary school? Is it benefical to enrol our children to a school that has the programme?
