to find any schools' balloting stats, first, you can go to MOE website to see which \"Planning Area\" the school is under. Then do a search under the Registration Thread for the area's name. The balloting links is on the first post of the thread.

We are thinking of moving within 1km to scgs or Nanyang Primary but we cannot decide which school to register for my girl.

Afraid Nanyang Primary need to Ballot. SCGS not sure the school standard is good?

I will opt for a "affiliated secondary school". Both Nanyang & SCGS are popular schools which have affiliated sec schools but SCGS has lower entry PSLE cut off point for its own students. I think Nanyang’s cut off is not so different from non-affiliation students. Currently SCGS is about 200 points (not sure on this) for own students (non affiliated entry point is above 250) so less pressure for parents and kids during upper primary. Despite this, SCGS is able to be ranked No.1 band in its O levels results. If me, I will choose SCGS if there are no other considerations. I know of an ex-tutor whose kids were in Nanyang. Because the kids academic performance were rather inconsistent as years went and due to the demands impacting behaviour of the kids, she got worried and tried to move them out of Nanyang in P4 to another good affiliated school. High ability kids should be able to survive well in Nanyang.

If u move within 1km of NYPS, it's VERY likely that u would still need to ballot based on past years trends. Ask yourself, are you willing to take the risk of going through all the hassle of moving and not getting a place in NYPS finally? For me, if I want to move, I would rather move to a place which is more assured of getting a school of my choice. In Bt Timah area, only SCGS and RGPS seem more certain based on past trends. Next would be MGS (a bit higher risk though). NYPS is definitely in the very high risk category.

[/quote]Nanyang is affiliated to Nanyang Girls which has the IP program (6 years without doing 'o' levels) whereas SCGS only has the 4 year program in its secondary school.

Another point to consider if your child has the potential to make it to the IP program.

                  Hi Hamster,

If I were you I will choose SCGS anytime. Reason being it has an affliated secondary school. And of course you may want to consider if you have other children as in if you have a boy. That will change the story again.

                    Dear fellow parents,

We are currently living overseas and are planning to register my dd for P1 2010. Need your advice here. We are contemplating between NYPS and SCGS - nyps because of parents’ affiliation and scgs because of < 1 km residence, so we suppose our chances of getting into either one should be pretty similar. We are torn between the two:

                    NYPS:
                    - chinese/bilingual environment, chinese values (pretty important to us)
                    - academically strong
                    - mixed school (parents’ preference)
                    - affiliation to nygh that has IP program (although cut-off point not very low)

                    SCGS:
                    - low cut-off to scgs (though only 4 years up to O level) (STRONG POINT)
                    - strong in arts/literature
                    - she has a younger sister only

My daughter loves playing her violin and gym classes, and nyps seems to be pretty strong in those areas. Her teachers did commented before that she has "dancers’ legs", and we also found that she likes dancing on her own, but we’ve put her in ballet dance class before, she didn’t quite like it (only like the "free-dance" part of the class) and requested us to stop ballet dance class and switched to gym class. She also loves to draw and write, which scgs seems to have a very strong department in this area.

So you can see, we are in a dilemma. On one hand, nyps is a very good and popular SAP school, and we would have gladly make this our choice, but many parents in this forum have strongly advised the choice of scgs because of its relatively low-stress primary school education (PSLE) to enter a good sec sch. DD is a pretty bright child (so we think, unashamedly…) and she could do well in a competitive environment. But then again, you never know what happens when she grows up and when PSLE is drawing near…

Any helpful advice, especially any insightful experience with either schools, is greatly appreciated!!!

There is no dilemma. Go for NYPS, which is the sure thing for you. Spend your time worrying about preparing your kids to go to P1, and NOT on getting another equivalent school that is too close to call, anyway.
