All About Preparing For Primary One

Dear all,

My child is going to P1 soon in 3 mths time. I am very worried about her concentration in class.

Most of her k1-k2 teachers said that she is quite a fast learner, therefore sometimes she seems a little 'bored' in class...That worries me because P1 is definitely not as easy as Pre-school.

She is also very forgetful. She will forgets where she places her book, her bottle is always missing...etc. I’m tired of reminding her to do her spelling, ting xie every week....I wish she can be more independent.

I'm thinking to send her to one of those holiday programme which teach student how to be more responsible and concentrate in their studies.

Any recommendation? :?:

lolz. my boy is going P3 next yr and i still need to remind him to do spelling or tingxie everyweek, else he will just browse the words the day before and be contented to just get 70-80%.

What you and your child achieve out of such programs really depends on what is the focus of the program.

What are you looking for in a short course?
- Exposure to Primary school like worksheets (MCQ)?
- Gain certain knowledge/skills?
- Asses if your child needs extra help/coaching before Primary 1?

For the classes I conduct, it's more of exposure to school worksheets (understanding how does MCQ work) and identifying their weak areas so that parents can work on them before they officially start P1.

For example, I have identified some who 'breeze through' their preschool's worksheets because the teachers give answers but are not able to do similar worksheets on their own.
The cause can be due to them not knowing how to read, or them not understanding the questions (can read but no comprehension). Or both.

Then the parents can decide on a remedy action (which I will advise parents). Sometimes the child improves very quickly with daily exposure to reading and simple worksheets done at home with parents. Sometimes they need 1-to-1 attention from tutor to re-explain all the basics.

There are some who are really well-prepared and I would tell parents that there's no need for tuition yet.
However, there are some that really need some intervention ASAP, before they start to lose interest and confidence.

my p2 girl still forgets her belongings.

for a start, u can train ur k2 kid to buy own food, carry own food, eat faster, eat wisely, count money, take down notes esp hmwk, rem to pack own sch bag, pocket $ n uniform. not just academic skills

DD is K1 this yr. Ya been trying to get her to eat faster, now she will take an hr to finish her lunch and dinner, even without TV

Hi,
My son in P4 still needed reminders for his ting xie and mo xie. He still takes some time to eat and if I don't bug him to take his bath and get homework done, he will take forever

my boy, now 5, also eats super slow - 1hr to 1.5hr stimes. unless its junk food eg burger or if its fruits. no. 1 was like that until this year p2

my no. 3 is only 3 but eats 30min. difference? no. 1 and 2 raised by granny. no. 3 is by my maid.

My son is super bochap…I have to get used to that until he matures…hopefully by secondary school. In the meantime, I have to encourage him. My daughter is going to P1 next yr…she is more kiasu than my son. Hope she stays this way next yr.

very worried for my boy. eat slow. do work slow. not becos he cant do tho he isnt very smart but just lazy n playful
