      I did the GD method on my 2 kids for both English and Maths. Let me just say that it works wonder for my son. He could read very well from K1, like a level 12 Ladybird. hHs Maths mental sum is accurate and fast, he was able to memorize multiplication table up to 13 when he was in K2. The same cannot be said for my daughter, perhaps I was not as conscientious since she was the second child. But, she caught on, she started reading full-length novels like the Harry Potter series, Artemis Fowl series since P3.


      I guess learning how to read is like decoding. Once you decode it, and if you are immersed in an English speaking environment, you keep hearing the words being used, so you can associate it quite easily. I think the strength of the method is in engaging the child since young and if it is done consistently, the child would have been exposed to a huge number of words before he hits kindergarten.

        GD advocates start with words only cos pictures are so colourful for the baby they won’t be intrerested in words if u start showing pic first.

        the rationale for either words or pics only is becos u dun want to distract the kid with too much info in one card. if u only show the kid the word apple, he will remember thats how the word looks like. during other times while eating his meal, u may tell the kid he is eating an apple. his brain will remember he saw the word apple before and this is how the real apple looks like. so dun have to worry he won’t know wats a real apple.

        in a nutshell, prepare five word cards, preferably in same category eg. apple, orange, pear, mango, banana. flash the cards as fast as you can, start with "this is apple, orange, pear, mango, banana" flashing the card as you go. remember to arrange the cards in the correct order, from back to front cos that’s the most efficient/fastest method n u can see wat cards u r flashing (becos the word is similarly written at the back of each card).

        repeat this for three times thruout the day, ideally morning, afternoon and night. the second day, retire one card say apple, replace with durian. so second day, flash mango, orange, durian, banana, pear. remember to change the order of the cards so the kid does not memorise the order. whole process does not take u more than 5 to 10 min a day.

        but do read the book yourself to get a better idea.

        dr robert titzer (the one who came up with your baby can read vcds) also advocates the same. just that his method is show the word, then the picture so the kid knows wat the word means. based on my own experience with dd, u can use both methods concurrently and the kid won’t get confused at all.

          Can anyone share what exactly to do if i were to teach reading, math and BIT together?


          How many words , BIT and DOT cards to flash daily?

          Can i still flash 25 words, 3 sets of 10 cards each set for BIT and 10 DOT daily?

          I have started GD method 2 months back. Currently doing reading for my baby 9 months.

          My son 3 years isn’t interested. Has stopped this method for coming 2 months but would like to start him with GD again.

          Appreciate experience parents advise.

            I've bought the book, and am working on the flashcards as per GD's requirement. I've just started out with my baby's first 15 words. So far so good. He seems to enjoy the session. 🙂

            Does anyone know when can their baby read? I saw a few video clips from youtube showing baby as young as 10months reading out from the flashcard. Impressive!

              for a baby to read the traditional sense, he needs to be able to talk first. this may be kinda hard for a young toddler. for my dd, i first discovered she could read using the YBCR (your baby can read) books. u can try this too. I showed her the word \"crawl\" (dun read for her) and asked her wat it is. she actually crawled for me to see! (u can imagine how ecstatic this mummy is!! :!: ) if i remember correctly, she was abt 14mths that time? at that age, quite difficult for the child to say \"crawl\". so at least it means she recognises the word, just that age-wise, not ready to pronounce the word.

              do remember one of the rules for GD is \"don't test the child!\" u can do it subtly in other ways, eg. in a playful manner, ask \"mama dun know wat is this. do u know?\" of course if dun know, just smile and move on. dun scold or say anything negative.

              at end of day, dun have unrealistic expectations so that if your baby picks up the reading easily, all the more happy. unrealistic expectation only bring stress to the kid. just enjoy the process as bonding time and u will reap unexpected rewards! 🙂

                I guessed reason is i did not flashed to him 3 times per day as i am working.

                  I just bought the GD book and would like to try the words cards on my dd. Hope I am not too late in doing that! Must the words cards be of the size specified in the book? Would like to try making my own instead of buying the GD cards, cos it’s quite expensive. Any mummies can advise pls? TIA!

                    Hello, I need advise as how to continue GD with my 16 months. My ds started GD when he was 3 months (yes..I am super kiasu :oops: :idea: ) as we chanced upon it when we were at the baby fair.


                    DEVELOPMENT OF MY CHILD
                    We are glad we started him early but to date, we do not know if he has benefited from it. He has yet to speak in 2 words...most intelligent words spoken thus far: \"aeroplane\" and \"umbrella\" and can sit on lap and listen to mummy reading stories. All these traits I do not know can be accounted from GD since we started reading to him at a very young age.

                    As he grows, I am facing this problem:
                    1) ds has learn to become selective to the books he wants us to read. I have to admit I shifted the responsibility of night time reading to dh when possible due to the repetition of the same story read to ds. It is so routine. Doesnt GD encompass him to read more different books?

                    2) On English & Chinese,
                    we are on the way to finishes phrases but he is also losing his attention span and we are losing our patience. The instructor has warned us not to test him but we really wonder if he knows. We used to put the pictures in a pocket folder and flashes the words but he seems more interested with the folder. 😢 I am now trying to get blank flashcards to see if it works. Anyone has this experience before?

                    3) On making books,
                    GD instructors wanted parents to self make story books based on the words he has learnt.

                    4) On Maths,
                    He has finished the Maths syllabus (+,-,x,divison, problem solving)

                    As I am moving to 3) and 4) I am slacking in providing more for him (ie. Maths fact and wirting stories) becos it is so tiring and time-consuming!!
                    I am a FTWM and my dh travel oversea so often. All along, I have been the one doing the stories and getting the pictures for the related words. Frankly, I am on the verge of giving up due to the commitment. Are there any easier route for me?

                    Can anyone advise and share their experience.... :?:

                      My boy has finished the GD program. Initially I faced the same problem as you.


                      But later I incorporate more pictures and encylopedia flashcards with words as well. Both English and Chinese. It helps.

                      All my boys started the GD at 1 mth old. Ist boy started talking in 3-4 words when he was 14mths old. 2nd boy started talking in 3-4 words when he was 7mths old.

                      I realised that incoporation of more right-left brain activities are needed other than flashcards in order to see if GD works. Till today my boys are still using it at age 5 and 2 yrs old.

                        Your boys started speaking really early. 7 months… wow!

                        What do you mean by more right-brain activities?
                        GD is left-brain training, right?
                        Please share what else you did beside GD?

                        When you say your boys are still using GD, do you mean that you repeated all the flashcards? What about Maths? Did you revise the +,-,x, division and problem solving again and again?

                        BTW, I called the GD Center and they recommend me to make Maths Story books for my DS…I really am too tired to do those books. Any other good suggestion?
