PSLE 2010 Results Report Here

Just came back from TKSS with my son.
Quite like the school but a bit too far. Is it a waste if I apply TKSS as 1st choice? Moreover, my son is not good in CCA.
As for Hai Sing, I'm afraid that the students there will be a bad influence to my son as the newspaper has reported many cases about them.
Thank you 25hourmaids & Augmum so much for the useful advice from both of you.

Hi ahqueneed some good advices.
my ds had fever during psle, with special consideration of 4 points, he has 232. goin to appeal for sst as he didnt manage to clear e 2nd around. now, we are struggling as to which schools to choose. seems like too risky to put sji as 1st choice, but we can only appeal if we put sji as 1st choice rite? our choices :-
1st choice - sji
2nd choice - maris stella / nan chiau
3rd choice - clementi town
4th choice - ?
5th choice - ?
6th choice - ?
we are staying at bt timah.
You seem to be in the same situation as Parentof3's friend. (or are you the friend he/she is talking about)?
My advice for your son is to forget SJI.
232 is 9 points away from last year's COP for SJI (241). Even with affiliation, SJI's COP last year was 238. Don't waste your 1st choice in this manner.
Your son can consider MS as his 1st choice instead since his Tscore meets last year COP for MS. This would be a more realistic approach. Hope this helps.
PS: Besides MS, there's also St Andrew's (233). In fact, St Andrew's would be a better choice than SJI (241). Do consider. -
Hi 25HourMaid,
No problem. Thanks for your help.
I am confused. My sonβs PSLE scores is 236 and he has extra 2 bonus pt on HTM. We stay in Tampines. So far our choices are as follows:
1) Anglican High
2) Chung Cheng High
3) Nan Chiau High
4) Tanjong Katong Sec
5) Ngee Ann Sec
6) Dunman Sec
Dear all parents and friends, your advice is much appreciated. Thank you in advance. -

I didn't say they were far worse than last year's; I said they would be worse with respect to this year's cohort compared to 230ers with respect to last year's cohort IF there was a really significant increase in the number of high-scoring students (250+).
Very convincing indeed, but taking into consideration of this year smaller population, and easier papers, which drives T score lower for overall performance, it is hard to conclude that this year's 230ers are far worse than last years.autolycus:
The COP as a rule does not change very much if the situation of a given school is stable. It is ruled by 'market forces', with adjustments for 'market failures' such as DSA.
The reason that the COP does not change very much is that the overall distribution of the PSLE grades does not vary much because of the large candidature. After raw scores are converted to t-scores, most schools will see at most a COP adjustment of 1-2 points.
Now, suppose there is really a significant increase in the number of people in the range 250-260 and also for scores >260 (for example). The question would be, how come? The main reason would have to be that the distribution shifted up as a whole while the spread remained about the same.
That means, if a candidate got a 230, that candidate must be actually be significantly worse compared to this cohort than another candidate with 230 in a previous year. There are more people with better scores.
So why doesn't the COP change much?
Because the market is essentially random after the top few schools and the DSA are taken into account. By the time you reach your second, and certainly your third choice, it is a lottery. That is why you should aim to hit a school on your first choice.
People being mostly rational, that is what they do. They read the COPs from the MOE website (or from KSP) and they go for a 1st choice school that is not more than +1 or +2 compared to the PSLE aggregate, or lower.
Remember that the COP is the LOWEST score of a student getting into a given school. When you look at the range entering a school, that doesn't help either; the top scorer may be there for many reasons β one of which is something like: had 260, applied for RI first choice and didn't make it, wound up with third choice.
Just some thoughts...

Last year COP for Anglican (240) & Chung Cheng High Main (236). For selecting SAP schools, your son's score will be 236+2 (238).Hi 25HourMaid,

I guess he can still try Anglican if that is his \"dream school\" since he is only 2 pts away.
But if he is fine with either CCHM or Anglican (ie he has no preference w.r.t these 2 schools so long as he gets into one of these 2), then putting CCHM as 1st choice will be more \"secure\". -

270 with distinction for HCL. A lot of people is against me applying for RV, but I have a very gd feeling and impression of this sch, especially after visiting the sch on 27/11/10. Did you attend the RV open house?Sall,

As far as I understand, if the sch is extremely popular and there are a lot of applicants, and it happens that their scores are also very much higher than COP, then appealing will fail as there are no vacanies. If the pupil psle t-score is higher than the school COP, does it mean it should be no problem for appealing?
Any example of appealing failed but the pupil t-score is higher than the school COP? -

Fairfield Methodist takes in affilated students, so a lot of students' scores are way below the COP. Bt Panjang is a better choice as all the students' score are above COP.MixedHerbs:

3 or 4) Fairfield Methodist Sec (COP 240)
5 or 6) Swiss Cottage (COP 234)
5 or 6) St Andrew Sec (COP 233)
Any advice?
How is Bt Panjang when compared to Fairfield Methodist?
