Comparing Chinese Enrichment (Primary/Preschool)
-
Your choice depends on how old your child is. While most of these schools offer the full gamut of courses targeting children from 3-12 and beyond, they have their own "core competencies" or emphasis in specific areas and topics. Below are what I think are the core competencies of each of these programmes based on my own research and in my own humble opinion:
Best for 3 years to 8 years
- Berries (introductory, fun, builds vocabulary)
Best for 5 years to 10 years
- Yuquan Language School (fun, drills, builds vocabulary)
Best for 7-12 years (fun, MOE syllabus training, composition and comprehension)
- Hua Language Centre
- Tien Hsia Language School
- Skylace Language School
Best for 9-12 years (Serious MOE exam training, composition and comprehension)
- Molin tutorial Centre
- Jiang Education Centre
Feel free to disagree with me. -

Molin has 2 programmes, one on Higher Chinese Enrichment and the other that focus only on Compre & Compo. Do you know how they conduct both programme?Your choice depends on how old your child is. My boy is in P1 now. He is very active and dislikes Chinese. He attended Berries since beginning of K2. I pulled him out recently because he detested going to the class and the Berries teachers had been complaining about his behaviour in the class. I was appalled by the results of the mock exam in school at the end of 1st semester. Thought a one-to-one coaching will be better, so put him on private tuition instead. However, it does not seem to help as the tutor is unable to discipline him and merely go through the assessment book. And I am having 2nd thoughts sending him to Berries again, but afraid the standard is too high and may put him off even more.
I am really worried for the coming CA2 as it is his first written/sit down exam. Any recommendation for a good Chinese Enrichment School/Teacher or Chinese Tutor in the Hougang/Sengkang area for my boy? -
Hi
Reputable Chinese enrichment centres are TienHsia (uses sch textbook to teach, advance teaching), Han Language, Hua Language and EduPlus, besides Berris.
Your concern is getting a suitable teacher. Have a talk with the teacher first before enrolling. I believe all centres are the same (ie sit down approach). -
I heard Tien Hsia is very academic and has chinese spelling every week. Is it true? I am already having a hard time teaching him his weekly school chinese spelling and would not want another stress.
Chose Berries because it is more "fun" and not so academic knowing my son cannot take it. My son has many teachers over his 1.5 years in Berries, and most of them will have the same comment about him. Only his school chinese teacher in the 2nd term can manage him.
What about Han Language and EduPlus? Are their curriculum same as Tien Hsia or more similar to Berries? You know of any good teachers in any of the schools? -
Berries teaches Higher Chinese, and my active son understands but dun recognise the chinese characters most of the time. He finds it very demoralising. Maybe his foundation is not well established.
Is it the same for Tien Hsia, Hua Language and Eduplus? -
Hi coffee,
It is unfortunate that you did not encounter suitable teachers at Berries at your area. My K2 boy is with berries (West area) since start of K1 and the main teacher (there are 2 per class) remain the same throughout K1 up until now.
Do you do reinforcements at home? I find that that is the key to retaining what has been taught in class. -

Nope. But I remember lizawa recommending it in another thread.Chief,
