your son still in ICR now?

      snow123:
      hi ningmum

They will learnt how to blend the sounds so they can 'make' out the pronouciation for the word that they have not come across.

I think their prog is good in a sense that i send my son when he is beginning K2 for the reading prog and after 6mths he can blend and read independantly. Although his childcare teacher told us that they taught him phonics but he can't blend the sound and makeout the word that he had never seen before, but after sending him to I can Read, at least he can read independently and the blending helps alot in their spelling. Now my son is in P2

        Hi JoeyZ18,

May I know how long has your son joined the I Can Read preliminary? My son just finished his second lessons. I decide to let him try one term and see what level will he move first.

            Hi Joeyz18,

That’s good. I am in same situation like you. So, should I request teacher for assessment or wait?

May I know what is the next level for your child? Is it I can read ?

Your son is in preliminary? Then maybe you should ask for assessment if not waste money and time

                  monster mummy,

my son is good with blending too but still in prelimary class which i think kind of waste time and $ too and he feel boring in class cos he knew all the lesson. reason cos he did not want to speak up during the assessment cos he shy to the ang mo teacher. and now i am thinking maybe i should not continue him there unless he go to another level like creative writting
Hi Moster Mummy,

My son is quite stable for vowel a,e,i, o and u. His teacher is teaching cl, fl and bl now. But he is at I can read Preliminary now.

                  Hi Lostbunny,

Do you mean teacher can move him to another level anytime? No need to wait for a new term?

The teacher will assess them if they can think they are ready for next level. Usually, it will not be a new term. Maybe halfway through the class, the teacher think that they are ready and they pass the assessment, then they will promote to next level that is one year course.
I am facing the same problem here. My 4 yo DS has been in PRP for 3 terms and still hasn't progressed to ICR level. I don't know why and didn't get a chance to ask the teacher. Feedback assessment form received so far, only pasted with stickers as a form of encouragement. There is isn't any comment or remark from the teacher written on it. Thus, I really don't know what is being taught and can't gauge his progress. Each time I ask DS, like others, he will give standard reply \"I don't know\" or \"I can't remember\", sounds alike isn't it?

At home, DS is reading P&J book 8a (he started with book 2a since last Sep'10) quite well plus able to read some other preschooler books (ie thomas & friends, pelangi, Usborne, etc) with some help at times on new words. For new words, he may need my help to prompt him in blending but most of the time, he is able to read at a reasonable speed with accurate pronunciation......The only thing is he still can't write each letter properly, far from writting well (v. poor motor skill, :stupid: ), not even writting his name. Will this be a barrier to move up??

                    Hi Joeyz18,

I intend to give my son few weeks times to settle down first because he is very dependent. After that, I will request teacher to do an assessment for him.

                      Hi DC Mummy,
You can actually inform the staff that you will need to talk to the teacher. I have face same situation as yours previously. My gal took one year to complete. Most of PRP, the children must be able to know first, middle and last sound and able to differentiate. If you think that the child is ready, you can ask the teacher. for 4 years old, some child still weak in motor even my ds also still weak in his motor skill.
