I recently went down to SHHK to enquire. Here's their clarification.

Number of years will be the main criterion in all cases - level of participation not included (unless of course you are office bearer).

If a school is very popular, their primary yardstick will be number of years the member has been in the clan - the more the better.

If school is not so 'popular', as long as member has joined for 1.5 years (I think), you should be able to get the letter. So all depend on luck.

Note that even if you manage to get the recommendation letter, you will still be 'fighting' with the grassroots leaders, parent volunteers....

Apparently, their last 'membership approval meeting' had just passed in mid July. Next one will be in 2009 - not sure if Oct is valid. that fella sounded very sure.
I had intended to join and was asked to submit my application by Sept as their approval meeting is in Oct.

        Hi agent 66,

Strange, the SHHK guy was very certain that the next approval date is in 2009. Moral of the story is to submit application asap.

For people trying to become a Hokkien Huay Kuan member, here's some info. The Hokkien Clan is located opposite the famous chinese temple at Telok Ayer Street.

Here is the http://www.shhk.com.sg/aboutus/joinus.html to their membership registration page with instructions to follow. As deang said, you need 2 current members of the cult - uh.. I mean clan to recommend you to become a member. Prepare a check for S$524.

Based on what I just heard, their next \"membership\" meeting where they screen and accept new members is in October. Also, they seem to have removed the 1-year requirement for recommending new members to their 5 affiliated primary schools (http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/school/kong-hwa-school, http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/school/tao-nan-school, http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/school/ai-tong-school, http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/school/chongfu-primary-school, http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/school/nan-chiau-primary-school), so you can still apply now if getting into Phase 2B is your objective.

You need to have members to recommend you into their fold.

You will have to read a 2 page manuscript in front of the clerk in Hokkien to prove your proficiency in Hokkien....

Before you faint... no lah... just pulling your leg. Just show your husband's or your own NRIC during registration. And yes... just Hokkien will do.

There are still a few things which we daddies are useful for, and the life-long categorization of our children's heritage is one of them. If it doesn't say Hokkien in your identification papers (BC, etc), you're not Hokkien even if you can wax lyrical in Hokkien tongue-fu.

bt if the spouse is hokkien, spouse can join right?

or mayb wat u mean is if the dad is teochew, bt wife is hokkien and she join...bt if the child needs a place, the child is considered teochew? so cannot use that affiliation?

so long as one of the parents is hokkien, they don’t take the child’s dialect group.
