All About Church/Clan/Society Membership

Hi,
Voovoo - If you are not a Hokkien, don’t think you can join the clan, they are very strict on this.
By joining the clan does not means that you are under phase 2B automatically, you have to submit an application form for the school you want to register in and upon clan’s recommendation, they will accept you as phase 2B applicants. Usually the recommendation will be out after the results of Phase 2A2 is release. I understand from here, some of the popular schools’ application is not being recommended at all, that makes them not eligible for Phase 2B.
And for a moment, I thought Tao Nan do not required PV. -

Hi 2galsmum - So joining the clan also does not guarantee being in phase 2BHi,

I'm not aware of Tao Nan's PV situation at the moment as I've only started checking out schools. Will probably write in to enquire real soon.

Hi,
To register as PV in Tao nan is not easy as you think, you need to go to balloting in order to become a PV. A few of my friends stay within 1 km of Tao Nan went for balloting in May 2008 this year for child born in 2003, they were not lucky enogh to get balloted as a PV and the only duties as PV in Tao nan is only Traffic Warden. You need to do the duties before and after the school. Can you do it ?
I met a lady who is a Hokkien Clan and she registered at Tao Nan recently and she was not balloted. She went to Kong Hwa yesterday and her chance is very slim because she stay 1 to 2 km of the school.
To registered as a member of Hokkien clan is very easy but that does not mean that confirmed you a space at the school that you want. -

I think it is a case of $$$ (clan membership fees) vs time & effort (PV)...if I could join, of coz I can rest and relax!
This is an interesting point, but from this year's Ai Tong case, we can see that even though PV and Clan/Church affiliation are qualifying criteria for Phase 2B, the two might be more different than we think.
In cases of intense competition, clan recommendations to schools appear to be rationed and dispensed based on other criteria. In the case of Ai Tong, it was reported by someone that only clan members who have been more than 4 years with the clan were given the recommendation papers. On the other hand, all PVs within the qualifying distance were allowed to ballot in Phase 2B. In this respect, PV is more \"certain\" than clan membership. -
Yes…I share Chief Kiasu’s views, drawing from my own P1 registration experience this year. Thus, I’ve given the same advice to my sis who will be registering in 2 years’ time, to go for PV instead, rather than clan membership even though I feel its relatively easier to get a clan membership (as long as you can get the 2 members’ recommendations), compared to PV applications.

Thank you v much for your advice. For me, clan is out since we are not hokkiens...I would go the PV route for Kong Hwa since we have a place within 1km...Hi,

Hi Kiasu2008 - thanks for the headsup on the Tao Nan situtation. It did also cross my mind that there are a whole bunch of new apartments coming in the Telok Kurau area that fall within the 1km range - most TOP Q4, 2010 to Q2, 2011. This will probably add to the number of applications for PV slots, and then Pri 1 places.Hi,
