ks2me:
Just curious, CMA teaches add and subtract only or all the 4 operations? What is their curriculum like?
They are doing 4 operators, running mental sum and abacus practice at the same time. The goal is to do mental sum without using abacus in hand.
Yes, like what bubble said. Parents need to be prepare of homework. but the homework normally is based on the child ability. The teacher won't forced child to do 5 pages if the child only can handle 2 pages. Consistency practice is the key.
Regarding bubble's concern on conflicting with primary school work. It is best time for the preschool kids to learn abacus as they have a fresh mind and not a lot of homework from kindy. If the child has already start primary school, then the parents need to tell the child that the metal sum ability is to verify the answer (not skipping working steps) and used on other daily activity (like calculation grocery shopping, buy food from store, etc).
hope it helps. -
thanks amy for yr reply. I saw the videos on the cma website all add and minus only so i thot only 2 operations.
so how does the grading or levelling work, international? -

Care to share how’s the learning process and obvious results that can be seen in your kids after going through the CMA prog?
Thanks. -

All the child has to go through the foundation practice books (a set of formulars on addition/substration), then they will go to grade/level, followed by multiplication/division,etc. The progress is based on child's ability & interest, also how frequent they practice. i.e. children who are attending cma twice a week sure progress faster than children who only go once a week. so although different children attending the same timing class, they have their own goal to follow. not one size to fit all type.Care to share how's the learning process and obvious results that can be seen in your kids after going through the CMA prog?

My daughter is a bit slow type, so I only let her attend once a week class. she is in the middle of the fundation right now, so it is still early to tell the amazing result like what the boy is doing on TV (the boy is attending twice a week class for more than a year). but at least now she can do mental sum/substration of 3 two digit no. which is a great improvement compare with last time counting her fingers and toes to do 1 digit sum.
just my 0.02. hope it helps. -

Hahaha... I guess parents have to be mindful not to compare the results of other kids... Cos some are more motivated than others to pick up the skill.

I'll be happy that my son can pick up the right maths concepts ... I think right now he is a bit confused becos I teach him using my method and sometimes my MIL will coach him her way... So ended up, he got mixed up :?:  -
Hi amylgf,
I’ve sent my boy to his 1st lesson at tampines branch yesterday, had used yr girls’s name as a reference.
Btw, i would like to add my son’s name here, incase anyone need a reference.
