[Geylang] Primary Schools

Hi, I stumbled upon this forum while researching for a school project. I saw this thread and I'd like to contribute about Haig Girls' School. I graduated a few years ago and I was one of the top students in my batch, making it to one of the top girls' schools in Singapore where I currently am studying. My experience in Haig Girls was really good overall. The environment in Haig Girls is decent - I didn't encounter any cases of theft, bullying etc. There are also no \"ah lians\" or such in upper primary. However, do take note about peer pressure relating to materialism (you must have ___ to fit in) - rather prevalent while I was there. Also, being typically girls, the girls can be rather cruel to classmates they don't like. I have personally witnessed this happening to another of my classmates. Nevertheless, it is a fine school and chances are, if your daughter is relatively gifted in studies, she will be given a whole lot of opportunities. I benefited immensely through these. It's the result of being a big fish in a small pond. The facilities are excellent - toilets etc are clean and cleaners sweep the classrooms every day and the campus is beautifully decorated with pupils' artwork lining the corridors and staircases. Classrooms are spacious and airy and the teachers are highly professional and capable and will go the extra mile to help your daughter succeed. The school also focuses on aesthetics - dance, choir, art etc are emphasized along with academic results. The sports teams, however, aren't that good, so if your daughter is athletically inclined, she would be better off in a place with excellent school teams. However, if she displays talent in the arts, Haig Girls provides an extremely conducive environment to nurture and develop her talent. Ever since my cohort graduated from Haig Girls', performance has been outstanding, with one of the top Malay students in 2007 and the top Indian student in 2008. I don't regret spending six years of my life in this school and I miss it very much. I hope you will place your daughter in my alma mater.
Hi. Thanks so much for the info on Haig Girls which I found very useful. Just another question, what is the ratio of chinese vs the other races in the school. I went down to the school on one Friday afternoon, I have seen many Indian and Malay students as compared with Chinese. Have nothing against the other races, but just would be good to know. -
tks isabellaswan87 for your feedback. I have already registered my girl in Canossa Convent coz I think I stand better chances. I’m sure other parents will benefit from your comment.

Actually Haig Girls has a very high ratio of non-Chinese vs. Chinese: by that I mean not only Malays and Indians but also of Caucasian people. It's a good environment, really exposed me to a lot of different cultures. The number of Caucasians seems to have increased after I left (my friend's sister has two of them in her class). Anyway, it's popular with the expat crowd of the latter groups - myself being from one of them. Hope that helps. -

Canossa Convent is quite good also. If you read the thread some parents give feedback about this school. -
Hi, I would like to say that Haig Girls is really a cosy and great school. Although i’ve managed to obtain a transfer to another primary school for my DD whose going to P1 next year, it’s with sadness and a measure of regret that both my DH & me are doing it (due to sch distance consideration for her little brother).
My DH has colleagues who are previously from Haig Girls & both of us have been to the school quite a few times over the last one year. We are both convinced that it is a school which cares a lot for its girls & has turned out students who are not only excellent academically & in the arts, but students who have good character. -
