Presidential Election 2011

frankly as far as I’m concerned, any Tom, Dick or Harry can be the president. The president just kisses babies and shakes hands. He doesn’t have any official influence and listens to the cabinet, with regards to reserves matters. On anything else, he better keeps his mouth shut, or he’ll be booted out of his office.

Just wondering whether President really does all the paper works or his secretary doing? -
I don’t want an old ah gong as President. If this job is so important, we should change our mindset and get capable, younger uncle than ah gong to be our president. What is your view and what age limit should he retire?
-
Actually the same thought occurred to me as I was reading the PE thread.
It is not so much of the image of an ah gong that I am concerned about.
It is the energy required as the role may be demanding given current scenario. -
To me, age/sex/race/religion is not a barrier if the person is capable and suitable.

And healthy and able to last his or her term.

Caroline3sg,
I was very impressed with Vincent's performance during GE2011 in May. And his speech on the many reasons why he wil not vote for a person blah blah blah is excellent, fantastic.
Basil Hwang's analogy on another class prefect to take care of a class when the teacher is not around is good.
Prof Paul's content takes a dig at many blunders the ruling party made, worth the laugh.
http://www.razor.tv/site/servlet/segment/main/news/68488.html, wasn't he ? I particularly like the ' Ah Ter and Ah Kau cannot look after each other ' story - how can 2 members of same team for 20yrs keep check on each other ??? only can cho hee, imho.
you would like this speech by Mrs Ivy Singh-Lim at TKL rally last night. Nothing much on endorsement on the candidate, but she is speaking as a FULL-BLOODED SINGAPOREAN, a common people kind of feeling.
** http://www.razor.tv/site/servlet/segment/main/news/68576.html ** <= please listen to her patriotic speech

I am very disappointed with the continuous endorsements from clubs, clans, unions, associations for the one person who will be keep status quo. As TCB said, he knows of many who are still afraid to vote with their conscious, in fear of repercussions.
An opportunity has arisen for us, but so many cannot care less.
I know this is not GE, but the recent GE 2011 has crafted out some changes, some actions by the ruling party, which many people has voiced out before to no avail.
Some are urging the people to replicate their astonishing triumph and spectacular gains in GE 2011, by reminding them that, for the first time in electoral history, they were able to make the powerful PAP government listen to their pleas and demands for changes / reviews in unpopular policies, including the hated ministerial salaries. They even 'retired' several unpopular ministers showing that they do listen. Only when they see the votes swing, then they act. Else, it would have been status quo.
This coming Presidential Election represents the people's best possible chance to INDIRECTLY reinforce and extend these gains, one that may not come again.
