Hi tamarind,
I started my son on keyboard ( Yamaha electone ). As he progressed, his teacher commented that his technique is not up to par. This could be because his previous electone teacher did not emphasise proper technique to him and that he could still play the keyboard with straight fingers. Subsequently, I got him piano lessons and his technique is much better now - he can't play well on the piano if he can't curl his fingers, so he had to consciously try to do it.
Just wanted to share my experience so your kid does not have to go through the same pain as mine.

I agree with pianojazzy
you need to buy piano when your children prepare to take exam
take exam cannot practise with keyboard
really different feeling and touching
AND the most important think keyboard all is same sound
pieces in exam need soft and loud, only piano can play loud and soft
play organ like robot, no feeling (no loud, soft, crescendo and everything)
if you want to make sure your children interest, better buy second hand piano so when you sell it again will be arround same price

My gal is now 4.5, started her 5 months ago at Yamaha Junior Course. She is now playing keyboard. Should I switch her to piano? She enjoys the lesson as a group of 10, but she also commented that she would like to play on the piano. Any advice?

Any piano school or teacher to recommend? I heard about mandeville music school. Any feedback?

Actually, for the Yamaha electone higher grades, you do have all these. Some of the electones are touch sensitive as well. You also have additional 'pedal' parts unlike that of a piano.

A Clavi is fine.

Don’t take my word for it… go to a Yamaha showroom and get your kid to try it.
Better still, try it yourself… technology has come a very long way…

There are controls to increase weight to the keys.

I am a firm believer in sustainability… inspiration comes from everywhere and not just the instrument itself.

Fancy meeting you here DS has started his piano lesson in April too.

Remember we once talked about our kids extreme sensitivities in another thread? DS sensitivities applies to his hearing too. Found this out accidentally as he tried, Toy R Us keyboard (about $99) for 3 months, Clarinova in school and upright piano at home. He happily settles for an upright but make sure that there is no foreign object on the piano as he will hear slight distortion sound.

You might want to get yr dd to try out all 3. Must try a few times and your dd will be able to tell you which are the ones she prefers. Ds has no objection in playing with the keyboard. But once he realized the touch and feel is different, the keyboard is no longer of use.

For Yamaha exam, do the students take their exam using Clarinova or upright? Are students allowed to familiarise with the exam piano before they play their piece for examination? DS commented he has to adjust his touch when playing using the teacher's upright, versus the one at home versus the ones they are to use during lesson which is a Clarinova. Immediate adjustment means that he does not play as well as at home because he is not familiar with the touch and feel of the piano.

Will have to check with the classmates cos my kid does not take piano but the electone in yamaha. I assume it is the upright cos that is what they do in class too when they are not using the electone.
I have heard of people renting the studio to use their instruments before the exams.

Clavi is ok if you choose not to take graded exam from various exam boards as ultimately in the exam, you are suppose to play on at least an upright with standard height of at least 121cm. But for yamaha exams is different as what they examine is also different from various exam board


If you are thinking of exams, i would suggest to get a piano instead.

I agree with EN. Children have very sensitive ears. They will tell you what they like. And as they learn music, when they grow up, they can also tell which piano they like or time to change a piano etc.

As for renting piano, it is very subjective. Rental is v high if you wan a better piano and it is not worth for it. For rental of 80-100 per month, sad to say the pianos are CMI.

Some people told me I should start her now because by the time she is in P6, she will be very busy preparing her PSLE and she will not have time for grade 8.

1) Should I start her now as of age 4.5year old?

2) If yes,Is there any good piano teacher to recommend?

3) If not, should I let her learn in Yahama when she is 6? Or Mandeville?

4) Any 2nd hand piano to recommend to start off?
