        Hi Jedamum,

I am also keen on the P3 & P4 Writing, Oral and Listening Program for my boy. My boy is in P4 now. Having seen the writing and oral materials so far in their normal enrichment class, I am confident that the programme will be good and will definitely be more in-depth. They always provide good strategy and tips in the materials. It is just a matter of how the teacher deliver them, how the child absorsb them and how the parents re-enforce them.

My problem so far is I am unable to find a suitable timeslot for my boy to do this program.

My son is in Berries now, seems to be doing ok but I heard from friends that Berries is better for younger kids, once they are older, should move them to other centres. Anybody with kids who are P3 and above can testify to this?

No leh, I have friends whose children were in Berries all the way till P6 and they did well. If your son has adjusted well to Berries, then should let him stay there since he is used to the way of teaching there.

Thank you, got me worried when I heard my friends discussing Chinese classes and when I said my son was in Berries, they told me to try other centres once he is older. He likes Berries and I intended for him to stay there for long. Were your children at Berries?

Yes, I agreed if they have started in Berries since young. It is best to let them continue especially they are used to the system there.

For those that are only joined for the short time frame might have difficulty to catch up. Overall, the programme still varies across where it depends on the children learning progress.

My daughter is in K2 and her chinese standard is atrocious for her age. She hardly recognises any chinese character. I finally woke up after the P1 registration exercise. I did my research on the net and decided to put her in Berries. Abit late, because the 2 trial classes she went to (at 2 different centres because they are both equally accessible for me) she was lagging by so much. But I still signed her up, hoping for a miracle haha.

My impression of Berries is very good. The 2nd centre I went to, the teacher was excellent. She was loud, clear and concise. She was engaging and during story time she spoke to me and taught me how to help my daughter catch up. It wasnt tips I hadnt know, but i liked her initiative, her wanting to help and her feedback about my daughter’s pace and behaviour in class. The admin staff who assisted me was also very systematic, professional and knowledgeable. I signed up on the spot.

On the other hand, the first centre I went to, the 2 teachers were always chatting, the classes ill-prepared (at 130 when the class is supposed to start, the kids were taking turns to read to the assistant teacher while the teacher is furiously preparing materials for the class, it eventually started at 150), the kids were left to read their own story books and the teacher didnt bother to even speak to me after the class. Considering it was a trial class and the admin informed me the teacher will assess my daughter’s standard and advise me accordingly. The admin staff also didnt give me much information about the course. But the plus point was my daughetr actually told me she enjoyed the class, considering she doesnt speak mandarin at all.

so my advise for all parents is to follow your kids to the trial class to see for yourselves, i believe not all the teachers are good and genuinely enthusiastic to teach.
