The principal recently asked students who scored D7 and below for their HCL O Level to leave the school, as we all know D7 is a pass according to MOE standards, the principal has been very unfair as to have done such a thing to the students. He even asked them to write an appeal letter in Chinese to persuade him to let them stay. Those who scored C5/6 were no better as they were required to write a letter to tell the principal to let them keep their 4H2.

      D7 is NOT a pass

If one choose a SAP school, you must be prepared the chinese standard requirement is more stringent, standard is higher. And you are willing to put in effort to improve and not just choose to escape with a pass. Otherwise, what is the difference between SAP and non. It is also unfair for parents and students who choose SAP hoping to be better in Chinese. If there is no distinguish between SAP and non, slowly the concept of SAP would die off and it is quite sad if this happens.

Just like one choose NUSH because strong in Maths and Science. Same concept as SOTA.

There are still some 'bochap' students in RV. The P is just trying hard to 'wake' them up. What he is doing is ultimately for the good of these students.

what the principal wanted is an appeal letter in chinese from the student

if the student wanted very much to stay and continue, then isn’t writing an appeal letter in chinese easier than looking out for alternative school ? show your effort, and probably the school will relent and let you stay. if the appeal letter is properly written, the school may deem it equal to an O level pass and let you stay, and get the student to retake the paper in JC1

if the students had the ability to get into the IP school after PSLE and yet in that 4 years in the IP school still not able to pass the CL paper with a C6, then the students must have been vegetating during CL lessons in the last 4 years.

based on the grading scale from MOE/SEAB, a D7 or E8 is a fail, not a pass.

after vegetating during CL lessons for 4 years and now being asked to write an appeal letter, is it too much ?

what the principal really wanted is to hear from the student themselves to justify their failure and show commitment to improve.

and if the student were really hopeless in CL, or have some justifiable disability in CL, then he should have gotten an exemption from MOE before that. obviously the student had the ability to get a credit pass but just prefer to neglect the subject totally during the 4 years, hoping that by being in IP, he could some how "through train" all the way to take A level.

if the student can put in consistent effort in all other subjects throughout the 4 years then why couldn’t spare some effort at CL ? isn’t consistent and regular effort the core of the IP concept?

to claim no ability at the end of year 4 is just plain escapism with poor excuse

Dd told us her form teacher STRONGLY encouraged the students to buy iPad2 and no loan from the school should the student does not have.

I guess we have to succumb to this pressure by quickly signing on the dotted line on the form and cheque. 😞

Don’t choose RV just because you have no better option with your psle scores. One has to bear in mind, it is a SAP school where one must be prepared to put in effort to do well in Chinese just like any other subjects. If you are thinking to get a mere pass according to moe criteria, knowing RV has this B4 requirement, then my recommendation is to consider properly before chosing RV.

Good advice. Do other SAP schools practise this minimum B4 requirement for CL too? Schools like DHS, HCI, NYGH etc?

After reading some of the posts here, I am pretty sad to say some parents simply don’t know what is going on in RV. Please, get involved in your kids’ life by at least attend talks or briefings organised by the school or read the newspapers and get your facts right. Eg, P did not ask those who are getting D7 and below to write letter in advance…fyi, the O level result was out yesterday at 2.00pm. All Y4 students are gathered together to listen to the P talk and then receive their results. The B4 criteria has been emphasized for as long as I know during briefings by the school. For the iPad thingy, other schools are doing it as well…Nanyang Girls is one of them. Some other schools have MacBook. Also, also get both sides of the stories. Some kids may be angels at home, but not so angelic in school. When things go wrong, don’t finger point at others but yourself…Who says parenting is easy? Take responsibility!!

\"bo-chap\" attitude is certainly undesirable and a good wake up call is needed.
During the Sat briefing, I found that the P was quite ok (unlike the rumours which said he scolds and scolds and scolds...). What he shared about parenting was simply logical and reasonable.
He even shared that preparation of A levels starts from Year 4 which is really a strong confidence dose for many parents including me.
