wau lau, just read what is copied and pasted in the post lah. couldn't you read that the green man was flashing ? or may be you did not even read lah ..... tsk tskWau lau! The link u gave is for subscribers! So how do I read the full story if I don't subscribe??
Don't get me wrong. I thk the driver shd be held accountable. He shd have looked out for pple crossing the road.
But my point is, why blame the school? So wat happens if the boy is crossing the road outside their hse? Who do u blame??
N the mother is a hsewife (per yesterday new paper) so if they are really worried abt safety, they will work somethg out to fit in the 'fetching' of kids to n from.
So who is slamming who?
did not read and start slamming parents....tsk tsk tsk

Mod's Note
Dear All,
Cool down. Please focus the discussion on the issue and not at each other.

Some principal’s mentality is that safety measures in school can be controlled but out of school may not be controllable.
There were some kids loitering around the car parks near to the school playing ball at the car park entrance and dashing on the roads of the car park. i called the school and informed them and followed up with an email.
a teacher was sent to the scene but the kids ran off when they saw the teacher and no one was caught. the VP replies my email and tiold me that rje kids need to de-stress after exam and this may be what they do to de-stress.
Playing and dashing across roads at car parks is dangerous. Fortunately no one was knocked by. But I guess the VP was right, i need to give them space to de-stress. i need to mind my own business. -
Flew off 20m?
What kind of speed was he on ?
Who ever the driver is really … -
Dear verykiasu2010,
I hve read ur post abt the news (English version) alot of times n i still do not see any green man flashing portion in the news, unless u mean the Chinese version of the news, in which case I thk it’s very unfair to slam n assume everyone can read Chinese (fluently or not) in a English forum.
I do not want to get into a quarrel with u but I hve to say that in all honestly, if the blame is on the driver I thk its natural. But to dd for answers from the school n MOE n not qn urself why u didt put in the effort to pick up ur own kid, I thk it’s unfair.
Back to my qn, so if the accident happened outside ur hse, then how? Blame PAP for not banning cars on the road?
peace n condolences to the family. -
Reminds me of my cousin who was knocked down when he was walking home alone from his primary school. He was also about the same age as this boy. He didn’t die but now suffers permanent damage. You may blame the driver but his parents blame themselves.
Agree that the driver is at fault for speeding but also want to warn parents not to trust your primary school kids to go home alone or even with maids if they need to cross roads! Have you seen how maids take the kids home? They are busy on the phone while the kids walk in front of them, and not holding hands. Arrange for a school bus no matter how near it is if you cannot walk them home yourself.
This case is similar to the 2yo China toddler who got killed by the van. Everyone blamed the van driver but forgot to ask the parents why a 2yo toddler was left wandering around near a major road. hmmm… -
Time for school to extend PV on traffic control?

-
Everybody needs to do their part…Parents have to educate their children about road safety. Schools likewise, they also need to provide a safe environment around the perimeter of the school. Finally, drivers/riders in the school zone has to keep their speed in check and be more vigilant of any misadventure from students. If all these are met, the risk of accidents occuring outside school can be greatly reduced.
Can understand the anguish suffered by the deceased’s parents. My heart goes out to them… -

Even if parents follow, what could they have done?

If the boy walk a few steps ahead of the parent, it could also have happened.
Anyway, it is not unusual for kids of his age to walk to and fro school alone, especially if the school is near the house.
Oh vicki....so housewife must always fetch their kids? :?
Btw, the green light flashing- i assume it is the green man flashing? -
Sad to read about this news especially when the child is the same age as mine. It’s really unfortunate that a young live is lost. My condolences to the family.
My kids (P5 and P4) just started to go back on their own this year. We cannot always be there to fetch them, at some point, kids need to learn to be independent.
For my kids’ school, they deploy those auntie and uncle to help to look after the traffic at the traffic light after school. Just the other day when I was at school after P1 PV session, there was this girl who "attempted" cross the road and the light was turning red very very soon. Eg. less than 3 counts. Luckily the uncle was there and stopped her. Otherwise an accident might happen. But as drivers in school zone, we really need to drive with care. But as parents, we also need to remind the kids of the dangers. This served as a reminder to me to print this news and show it to my kids.
