Can someone please help me with this question:

      A +B = 120
      A - B = 48
      Find the value of A.
      Thanks
      Hi

For P3, a neat way is to use MD.

      A - B = 48 ------ This means A is 48 more than B.

Draw a rectangular bar to show A.

Draw another bar, a shorter one, to show B.

Bar A is longer than Bar B by 48.

      So, you’ll have
      (B + 48) + B ------ 120

      B + B ------ 72
      B ----- 36

      A ----- 48 + 36 -------120

      Best wishes

          Hi Tianzhu,

I would appreciate if you can advise on the solutions to obtain the answers as i am totally clueless how to solve them.

          Thanks.

          Hi

          Where are those questions from?

Those questions appear to be more like puzzles and brain teasers. They are not the types of typical questions found in past years papers.

          Hi Tianzhu,

The questions are from the enrichment centre that my son attends. It is part of the heuristics questions. Appreciate your advice. Thks.

            Hi

Due to time constraints, I’ll be only taking Q1. For the rest of the questions, please check with your child’s enrichment centre.

For P3 kids, some form of drawing might help.

            Best wishes

              Hi all.

Anyone knows an easier way or a more straightforward method to do these kinds of sums?

              Every digit is different.
The sum of the thousands digit and the tens digit is 10.
The sum of all the digits is 16.
The difference btwn the hundreds digit and the ones digit is 6.
The difference btwn the thousands digit and the hundreds digit is 3.
The number is greater than 8000.

              It’s a four digit number.

                Hi

Is this type of question in the syllabus?

It looks more like a brain teaser.

                The answer is 9610.

                Best wishes

Hi Tianzhu.. it is in their Maths Homework book and if I'm not mistaken they have this kind of questions at the end of one/every chapter. I guess you are probably right that they are brainteasers. But DD was too tired so it was my brain that had to be teased :frustrated:.. No fun esp with my 1yr old boi boi so cranky waiting for me. There were a couple of questions like that for today's homework. :faint: I have found the answer and it was from number bonds plus guess n check. Hence I wanted to find out if there are other ermmm easier or shortcut ways. 😉

Can get the answer easier if start from the last clue.

The number is greater than 8000. -> 8xxx or 9xxx
The difference btwn the thousands digit and the hundreds digit is 3. -> 85xx or 96xx
The difference btwn the hundreds digit and the ones digit is 6. -> 96x0
The sum of all the digits is 16. -> 9610

But how to teach the kids to recognize that?

                      Hi buds

                      Good Morning.

For P3 kids, I think number bonds with GC and logic reasoning is a good approach.

The other way is to use boxes to represent the digits in a pictorial way. I am not too sure if it’ll be shorter but it’s definitely more mechanical.

If you’re interested to see, please let me know. I’ll try to figure something later.

                      Best wishes
