    • RE: Purported Primary 1 bonus question confuses the Internet

SINGAPORE - A purported bonus question from a Primary 1 examination paper has left netizens stumped after it appeared on local forums on Monday (May 15).

A photo of the bonus question, which is worth four marks, first surfaced on the HardwareZone forum site and later spread on social media.

The circular puzzle, which has five numbers, calls for the taker to study the number pattern and fill in the missing numbers. No further information was given on how to solve it.

The question said marks will be awarded for correct answers, while no marks will be deducted for wrong ones.

Netizens were split over the correct way to solve it, with many suggesting that there was no fixed answer.

A check by The Straits Times found that a near-identical puzzle had appeared previously on the blog of Gordon Burgin, who claims to be an author of maths puzzles and logic problems.

However, the bottom-left number in Mr Burgin's puzzle is 20 instead of 2.

Called the Petite Circle, Mr Burgin's puzzle provided more information on how to solve it, and contains a detailed solution.

The puzzle is reminiscent of a maths question, dubbed \"Cheryl's birthday\", that went viral across the globe and left netizens scratching their heads in April 2015.

It was initially mistook for a Primary 5 question but turned out to be a Secondary 3 Maths Olympiad question.

    • RE: Primary 3 girl in hospital following liquid soap ‘revenge’

For enclosed water bottles, a child may not be able to sniff the antiseptic soap scent or any other scent for that matter, through a thin, plastic straw.

Sipping via the straw would mean the girl may not have a way of spitting water out, once swallowed.

    • RE: Primary 3 girl in hospital following liquid soap ‘revenge’

Police are investigating how a Primary 3 girl had to be hospitalised after drinking from her water bottle which a classmate had allegedly added liquid hand soap to.

The victim had a fever and bouts of vomiting afterwards, Chinese evening daily Lianhe Wanbao reported yesterday.

The male classmate, nine, had reportedly wanted to help a friend from the same class who had a falling out with the girl.

On Wednesday, the boy allegedly returned to their classroom during recess time to carry out the act.

All three are Primary 3 pupils of a school in Jurong.

Shortly after the girl drank from the bottle, she developed a fever and vomited twice. The school contacted her father to take her home.

      BUBBLES

The girl's father told Lianhe Wanbao that the family's maid was washing the water bottle when she noticed soap bubbles. There was also a strong smell of Dettol.

She told the girl's father, who returned to the school to question the teachers, before taking his daughter to hospital.

He said the hospital had told the police about the case.

While doctors said his daughter would not be in any danger in the long term, she was still vomiting and remained in hospital as of yesterday.

The Dettol liquid hand soap used was actually a prize won by the victim at a lucky draw held in school on the same day. Her father told Wanbao it had been left on a desk in the classroom.

On Thursday night, the boy visited the girl at the hospital, accompanied by his 27-year-old mother and a teacher, Wanbao reported.

The boy stood by the girl's bedside crying as he told her: \"Sorry.\"

The boy's mother also apologised to the girl's family at the hospital.

She said her son did not have many friends in school and that he poured the liquid soap into the girl's bottle following his friend's instruction, as he did not want to jeopardise their friendship. - THE STRAITS TIMES

SINGAPORE — A primary school girl landed in hospital after her male classmate, nine, added liquid hand soap to her drink.

According to a Lianhe Wanbao article on Friday (March 24), the girl suffered from “a fever and bouts of vomiting” after consuming the contents of her water bottle.

Responding to queries by TODAY, the police confirmed that a report has been lodged and investigations are ongoing.

Lianhe Wanbao reported that the boy had done it to help another female classmate take revenge on the victim, following a falling out between the girls.

All parties involved are Primary 3 pupils at a school in Jurong.

Quoting the victim’s father, the newspaper wrote that the maid noticed while she was washing the water bottle that it had a “strong smell” of soap.

Sort out some photos of our Iceland trip so I'll start posting them here on day by day basis.

      Day 1:
We took the Finnair fight leaving Singapore at midnight on 28 Feb. arrived Helsinki at 6am in the morning. Check out, kept our backs with luggage storage and took a finnair bus to town. Explore rock church's and Sibelius monument before getting back to the airport for our 2.20 fight to Reykjavik. Iceland is 2 hours behind Finland. It was a 3+ hr flight. We arrive Reykjavik around 4pm. Met upon arrival by our guide. He drove us around the city to give us an overview before we got to our hotel.

Left our bags and walked to the bay. Went by Hofoi House, the famous house where Reagan and Gorbatsjov met and effectively ended the Cold War.

    • RE: Recommendation for hiking boots

Hi, everyone. Can you share recommendations for a good pair of boots to use for hiking trips? Preferably something not too heavy to allow for comfortable backpacking ( lotsa walking ), waterproof and has good traction for both wet and dry weather conditions. Thank you in advance.

    • RE: 'ST : How can 97 marks be not good enough?'

Singapore school adds Higher Chinese class after furore over 97-marks rejection.

Parents of students at St. Hilda’s Primary complained to media last month about the stringent criteria to study Higher Chinese.

SINGAPORE: The school which made headlines after a student scored 97 marks but still failed to qualify for the Higher Chinese stream has reviewed its criteria and opened an additional class for the subject, it was revealed in Parliament on Mon (Feb 6).

Last month, St Hilda’s Primary School sparked widespread debate when a parent complained that despite his Primary 1 child’s interest and score of 97 marks in Chinese, it was not good enough to read Higher Chinese at Primary 2, as it was outside of the top 25 per cent of the cohort.

The Ministry of Education’s (MOE) Parliamentary Secretary Low Yen Ling said the cutoff mark for St Hilda’s was unusually high as the school sought to ensure a high level of ability in students who wanted to take the Higher Chinese language.

“We acknowledge St. Hilda’s good intentions in making sure students who want to take Higher Chinese are well-suited and also ready to take on the subject because it also entails extra curricular time and a heavier study load for the child,” she told Parliament.

“MOE is very glad the school is making positive steps very swiftly to enlarge its pool of Higher Chinese language students. It reflects the school’s commitment in terms of teaching and learning of mother tongue languages - not just Chinese, but all three.”

Earlier, Ms Low said she was heartened by the enthusiasm shown by parents and students for Higher Chinese language. “We want to assure the House that the schools are deeply committed to the teaching and learning of Higher Mother Tongue languages,” she noted. “We do so because its not just about mastering a higher level of language, but deepening bilingualism which is an integral part of national identity and cultural heritage.”
