¼ of Hito’s marbles is equal to 1/5 of Troy’s marbles. If they have 36 marbles altogether, how many marbles does Troy have?

There are 80 pupils in Class A and Class B. 4/9 of pupils in Class A are boys and 3/5 of the pupils Class B are girls.

b)\tHow many boys are there in both classes?

Total number of pupils in Class A and Class B --> 80
Number of pupils in Class A is a multiple of 9 and number of pupils of Class B is a multiple of 5. Since the total number 80 is a multiple of 5, then the number of pupils in Class A must also be a multiple of 5.
This means that the number of pupils in Class A is a multiple of 5 & 9 --> 45, 90, 135...so, there are 45 pupils in Class A
Number of pupils in Class B --> 80 - 45 = 35... with this, (b) can be worked out.

this question would normally be solved using Guess & Check if the students have not learnt multiples/factors
4/9 of pupils in Class A are boys --> number of pupils in Class A is a multiple of 9 ie divisible by 9
3/5 of the pupils Class B are girls --> number of pupils in Class B is a multiple of 5.

according to the worksheet, this is a typical PSLE type of question, not nesscessarily for just P4.
i think its good to expose DS to such question now for him to be ready in 2 yrs time.

(1) A common multiple of 3 and 5 is 15.
2/3 ------- 10 units
2/5 -------- 6 units
10 units ------ 40
1 unit ------ 4
15 units ------ 60
The number is 60
Check
2/3*60 ------- 40
2/5*60 ------ 24
(2) The difference in age between two people always stays the same.
In 6 yr time, she will be twice as old as Ann.
Min ------- 36
Ann ------ 18
Difference ------ 18
Hence, Ann is (18-6) or 12 now.
