The Birds and the Bees

I told my kids, as soon as they are able to understand, that they came from my tummy.
I also told them that its like \"pass motion\" when they came out from my tummy  And it was very very painful for me. Both my kids understood immediately, because both also had very bad constipation before
I also told them that when they were in my tummy, they \"drank\" my blood using a \"straw\" (umbilical cord) through their belly buttons
They were totally amazed. I think this reinforces how important mommy is to them !
My hubby also showed them (in books and video), how the sperm came into contact with the egg (microscopic view), and how the cells start dividing after that. But we never said anything about the sperm got into Mommy's tummy  I only told them that a man and a woman must get married first before that can happen.
My mother used to tell me that she picked me up from a rubbish dump, and for a long time(until I studied Biology) I actually believed her ! -

Not sure if you're referring to my post? It's the DK Children's Illustrated Encyclopedia. It's blue and very well illustrated. We love that one! Good luck!
haha, cool. I think I could \"adopt\" a few of your creative answers for future use. You won't believe this, my dd again this morning asking me why adults can have babies but children can't! (OMG, my \"chicken and hen\" story failed the purpose.) This time I told her it was like the growing phases of a plant, first you are a seed, then it sprouts, grows, blooms, then bears fruits/seed again when you grow big enough. And she said \"I see\" three times and seemed quite approving of my answer this time. I think I really need to get an encyclopedia and keep it handy like you did. Any good one to recommend?BlueBells:
When my younger girl was 4 +, she asked me how come her elder sis was born first and not her? I went, \"er ... because you played scissors, paper, stone, and you lost so jie jie came out first.\"
Hahaha .. not the best answer but she believed it.
Anyway, the kids knew that daddy put them in mummy's stomach, and that was about it. -
wow, tamarind, you are truly creative.
And thanks for the hyperlink, the book title and all the ideas. -
We all have our fair shares of encounters with our children on this topic. But what would you think is an appropriate age to bring it up for discussion? Some kids mature a little earlier than others, and personally, I would like to be able to discuss this with my kids when they are about 9 or 10, before too much awareness sets in and they get embarrassed and shy about it. Any ideas on how to bring this up?

I shared my experience of broaching the subject with my boys at http://www.valtay.blogspot.com - under \"Tackling the birds and the bees\"

I shouldn't be laughing because the time will come when I need to explain this to my son... But I thought your account on your blog was funny LOL

My 6-yr-old always tell me she broke off with her boyfriend (for the nth time) again. Then yesterday she said she wanted to take off her clothes and kiss her boyfriend!! OMG, what should I do???

Hi Luanee
I’d be alarmed too if my daughter said that to me.
First, perhaps examine how she gets such ideas in her innocent mind. Has the child been exposed to TV programs unsuitable for the kids… and I dun mean R21 ones… nowadays they have unsuitable themes in the prime time TV slots as well.
The latest Juhua (Korean TV drama at 7pm, channel U) K-wave show had the lead actor play up his anticipation of the wedding night with a lot of suggestive remarks and wink wink stuff.
When I tape new Jap anime cartoons for the kids (such as DGrayman), I will vet the shows for adult themes (such as Burst Angels) and not tape the ones unsuitable for kids.
When we tape movies such as 2 Fast 2 Furious (my boys like cars) off the TV, we watch it with the kids with a remote in our hands. When you can anticipate the kissy kissy scenes and when the actor/actress will start undressing and jump into bed is going to happen next… fast forward, ha, ha! That’s what we do lah.
Perhaps you cud just ignore her comments and take a wait n see approach. Sometimes, kids say certain things to get extra attention e.g. swear words. I doubt she will seriously really do such a thing. Maybe it was just said in jest.
But I have been teaching my 5-yr-old girl that some parts of our body is private, and to shut the door when changing (becos she has 3 older brothers), which she does remember to do so all the time. So she is already not inclined to want to appear undressed.
Hope it turns out alright for you. -

i totally agree. the recently Crimebuster x2 which ended its run in Channel 8 have one such scene whereby the girl said that she'll take off her clothes for the guy if she likes him. I stared at my K2 boy and then asked him 'like that can anot' and he gave me the disgusted look.

whenever i tried to shoo my boy away or distract him from the programmes when i anticipate such scenes, my boy get irritated cos he complained that i disrupt him from watching the whole show.
