      Phrases such as together with, as well as, and along with are not the same as and. The phrase introduced by as well as or along with will modify the earlier word (mayor in this case), but it does not compound the subjects (as the word and would do).

      The mayor as well as his brothers is going to prison.

      this sentence should be seperated by comma
      The mayor, as well as his brothers, is going to prison.
      is the correct way.


      The mayor and his brothers are going to jail.

      the word 'same' and 'similar' has different meaning too.

      Its been a long time since we learned our grammar and rules..our brains may have rusted..so need more oiling again..

      whenever my DD asks me something..I quickly go and check internet or grammar book..as I worry may be I am wrong :roll:

      well its high time I brush up my grammar also, other wise DD will say mummy you also don't know :slapshead: :stupid:

        My DD already says this :oops: I just say, \"See, mummy is also learning together with you. Learning is really fun. I am enjoying it.\" She will keep quiet.

              there is no such thing as a one method fit all in learning... especially in languages

              language is best learnt from speaking more, listening more and reading more.

              most importantly it is listening more.

              and i think normally what the school teaches is enough.

              i don't know what is the complete practice blah blah, but if you find that it is not working, then it is advisable to try another method

                  I hope you are well. It is a long time since we have spoken on here.

                  DS1 sneers at reading but loves comprehension (MCQ and OE), as well cloze, but comprehension is my covert way of getting him to read. He struggles with wordy maths problems, which I put down to a lack of reading. I therefore play to his strengths as he enjoys the assessment books - as this bilds up vocab and comprehension.

                  As for reading material, I have bought him wrestling magazines as children like him, are into that. Oh well! I shall keep trying...... :xedfingers:

                    Hi Optimistforum


                    How I got my kids into the habit of reading, was to initially introduce them to books that featured their areas of interest, eg. ballet, dancing, animals, dinosaurs, magical creatures, myths & legends etc.

                    So if your child is interested in wrestling, you can try looking for books that has a wrestling theme, eg. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_p_n_feature_five_bro_mrr_2?rh=n%3A283155%2Cn%3A%211000%2Cn%3A4%2Ck%3AWrestling%2Cp_n_feature_five_browse-bin%3A2579000011&bbn=4&keywords=Wrestling&ie=UTF8&qid=1333866678&rnid=2245026011

                    Also, if a book has a movie / cartoon, you can watch the movie first and then encourage reading the book thereafter, eg. Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter, Spiderwick Chronicles, Charlotte's Web, Babe etc.

                    All kids are different, as to what will work for them, have to keep trying until something clicks. Good luck!

                      Yes. It's been quite awhile since we last spoke. šŸ˜‰

                      My boys loves to read and it is all about mysteries and fantasy. Sometimes the story books carry some riddles. I guess he likes to read is because initially i read with him.

                      I guess this kind of story books are better as they encourage you to think further and solving the riddles. In a way, it encourage you to comprehend the books. Perhaps both yourself and the child read the same books so that both of you can have a common topic and hence encourage reading. That is my humble opinion.

                      Anyway, keep trying. :rahrah:

                        The sentence is in present tense, should use (1) but still already eaten,my DS said should be past tense ??
