\"Ear\" is pronounced ir, according to the dictionary. Hence, it is 'an ear'.

I checked dictionary.com and it varies slightly, ie, 'eer'. Doesn't 'ee' pronounce like it starts with 'y'? :?

If it was pronounced with a 'y' sound, like 'year', the dictionary pronunciation would read 'yeer'.

You may use this as a guide. When the word is not pronounced with the typical phonetic sound, the usual \"a/an\" rule does not apply.

E.g. \"h\" in honest is silent and not pronounced as how \"h\" should be done. Instead the \"o\" sound is used. Thus the \"a/e/i/o/u\" rule kicks in here. Therefore it becomes \"an honest\".

E.g. \"u\" in uniform, unicorn, unit, etc., is not pronounced as the usual \"u\" sound under phonics, therefore the \"a/e/i/o/u\" rules does nt apply. Instead \"u\" in ugly, untidy, understanding, etc., use the typical phonetic \"u\" sounds, therefore \"an\" wld be used with these words...

Hope my explanation helps...trying my best to put what I know into words You can think of other words and would realise they would fit into the rules I mentioned.

Hi everyone, My son is in Primary 1 and he scored 89 in English SA2.

He is still bad in his comprehension and composition.

How to coach him in a fun way. He hates to sit down for hrs and do his work. But he loves to do maths and Mother tongue since its not time consuming.

Hello,seems that many ,if not all ,the P1s are learning EL the Stellar way now.My child basically has nothing..no textbooks,workbooks,guidebooks...nothing at all.I am feeling a little lost as to how to tackle this.I revise grammar and voacb with him.

Can anyone enlighten me as to whether there are any resources/books I should follow to complement this Stellar thingy?

Did your son bring home any stellar worksheet fm sch? u can take a look and see what u need to supplment. I feel that stellar worksheets are not sufficient,abit easy (sorry nt hao lian ya). u can try getting a gramma guide/hand book, theres a few selling in popular. U can also gt some P1 assessment books for him to try and see which area he is weak in esp grammar, cloze passage n etc.

For those pri sch having SA1 or 2, im sure eng papers not only testing on stellar thingy, wil have some basic grammar, compre and cloze passage.

Qns - for P1 English Comprehension, is full complete sentences expected for the answers?


example 1. why is john happy?

is \"because it is john's birthday\" acceptable? or must it be \"john is happy because it is his birthday\"?

example 2. what would you do if you are bitten by a spider?

is \"I'll tell an adult to ....\" acceptable? or must it be \"If I am bitten by a spider, I'll tell an .... \"
