I find that daughter's comprehension passages from school require her to know how to 'find phrase or word' from passage. Is this called 'infer' ?

For normal revision on comprehension, my daughter is using 'success in comprehension' by manda pullen.

          Hi Janet,
I do not think finding \"word\" or a sentence is inference type of questions. These look more like vocabulary type or right there in the paragraph type of questions..

For eg. Find the word in the paragraph 2 which has same meaning as 'angry'. This is vocab question

For eg. Find the sentence which shows that the boy was injured badly. This is like \"right there in the paragraph\" type of question bcoz the sentence is available in paragraph. children just need to find it.

For Inferential type of question: Look for the clues the author left behind so that you can put them together to find (infer) the answer.

Eg see the paragraph and question below for your understanding:
When night came, everyone sat around the campfire. They watched the stars twinkling in the sky through the trees. They toasted marshmallows, sipped hot chocolate, and told ghost stories. Finally everyone said \"goodnight\" and fell asleep in their tents.

The next morning dawned warm and clear. Max and Patrick decided to explore.

          Question:
Based on what you read, do you think it rained on Saturday night or Sunday morning? Why or why not?

Answer: Based on what I read, I do not think it rained on Saturday night or Sunday morning.
The story said that the stars were out on Saturday night and that Sunday morning was clear.

Hope this helped you out.. πŸ™‚

I am also struggling with my DD1 whose in P2. she also confuses these types of questions in comprehension. I think will take time and practice for them to learn the proper answering technique for each type of questions..

            ya agree with mother777’

Infer-it is what the writer implies but not stated explicitly
            phrase-related to vocabulary,word replacement.

No prob...I was recommended this title by other ladies here.
For grammar, I am using a few titles like Conquer grammar, fairfield, one published by EPH. Bcos have to revise her pronouns, adverbs, adjectives every now and then. Easier to buy.

May I ask a question about Success in Comprehension and Mastering Comprehension. In relation to the MCQ passages, do they contain more than 5 questions per passage. I would like books that have this.

Also, some feedback on EPH Excel in Comprehension (mentioned in this thread last year). It is not a great book; certainly not challenging - one I would not recommend!!!

I have managed to find MCQ English Comprehension books for Old O Levels, but I am pinning my hopes on finding some really demanding P5 and P6 difficult MCQ Comprehension books. Any help to point me towards relevant books would be most welcome. :imcool:

Yes I find the comprehension assessment books quite limited, their questions are rather easy compared to good sch papers.
