My boy does that too....'I want to eat now' becomes 'I want to eat (in mandarin) ē°åØ' :roll:
And for word recognition, eg he can recognise that that chinese word means Monkey, but can't remember how to read it in Chinese! -

Cos my son was still not talking at 18months and would only say Pa Pa and Ma Ma (in chinese)... in addition I taught my boy sign language from young, so he was signing a lot too! So PD was worried that the bilingual environment was confusing him... and advised that I kept to 1 language till he could talk more... (hee.. but I didn't heed his advise)
Why did your PD advise you to stop the bilingual environment? -

I agreed, it is easier for this generation children to learn and speak English. If you take notice. The children now speak to each other in English ALL THE TIME!
And the only time they speak Mandarin is only in their Chinese Classes.
And EVEN during the Chinese Lesson,
Kid will have no choice but to converse with Chinese Teacher in Mandarin.
BUT Kid to Kid = English.
As for the Bilingual Environment, I personally feel that we should not restrict on the language. Expose our kids as young as possible to as many language as possible. Their learning capabilities are like SPONGE! They can absorb many things and even adapt easily. You will be surprised how much they can learn.
But it is important to always speak to them.
I learnt from a mistake.... few years back, whenever I scold my children... I always use Mandarin. (Most of the time, we converse in English).
Then my mom highlight to me that why my kids prefer English. cos' everytime mommy scold us in Mandarin..so we don't like Mandarin / Chinese... :shock:
So...from then on... I have to be very careful....
After few years.... things have improved. They don't seems to dislike Mandarin / Chinese as before.
Recently, I bought a 2nd hand A-Star Han Yu Pin Ying CDs set for my kids to try... I would think this is a good recommendation. It hard to get them to sit down and learn thru books all the time...so every time, we read the book, I will then put on the A-star Cds for them to revised by playing games and the games will also give them scoring.. Kinda of motivate them! -
same here. the last parent-teacher-meeting i attended with the chinese teacher, she asked me to enroll my son to a chinese enrichment class. my son is currently attending phonic enrichment class and he can already read within 6 months joining the enrichment class. looks like the kindergarten relies on all these enrichment classes too much, makes me wonder what they've been doing all the while :roll:

I agree. Somehow I find that the time allocates for Chinese Lessons in most Kindergarten is comparatively lesser compares with that allows for English/Maths Lessons. So most of the times, teachers would encourage us parents to enrol our children to a chinese enrichment class.
Recently, my girl keeps reciting something repeatedly and I am wondering what that she is reciting. Then I realise what she is reciting:\" ęØ å=ę, ę„ ę=ę, å° å¤§=å°....\"I ask her do you understand what you are reciting and she says yes. So I ask her to explain to me and she actually did that correctly :lol:
So, I am really wondering is this the right way to learn Chinese? And she is going P1 next year, I still feel that the Kindergarten teacher should prepare them more on the Hanyu Pinyin....andrew:

I feel that to learn Chinese well, Hanyu Pinyin may not be the best way..
Frankly, I was a bit disappointed when I realised how the teaching methods have changed so much in Pri Sch. (since when I was in school lah). Hanyu Pinyin is helpful to some extent but it becomes sort of like a crutch... and students can't recognise Chinese characters as well.
I ever came across a post by a parent... she was initially so proud that her kid could read a Chinese book out loud to her... then when she looked at the book, she realised that the kid was just reading Hanyu Pinyin and couldn't read the Chinese characters without Hanyu Pinyin.
My friend in the childcare industry ever made a comment that young kids are also getting confused btw Hanyu Pinyin and English phonics. (sorry.. can't remember her example) And that MOE realises that they really need to revamp (again) how Chinese is taught in schools.
So, Champion, give your child a pat on her back... think she's doing great.. but of course, she'll still have to learn her Hanyu Pinyin... cos the education system requires it...and it is helpful lah. -

Yes, I agree with you that she still has to learn her Hanyu Pinyin... cos the education system requires it...that why I am abit worried for her and am still considering whether to put her into the enrichment class. I do teach her Hanyu Pinyin at home but just worry it might not be sufficient

Can anyone enlighten me? The hanyu pinyin for chinese word - \"who\" should be \"shei\" or \"shui\"? :roll:
I was going thru the \"LITTLE PROFESSOR HANYU PINYIN BOOK 2\" published by Educational Publishing House Pte Ltd with my girl when we came across this word. The book prints as \"shei\".
