2009 GEP Screening And Selection

Actually I really feel that MOE should have a seperate school for GEP's and not attached to any school to avoid the training in schools  and also ban the training centres who train students for GEP. otherwise this Elitist group will grow more and then pgms like GEP is a dream for middle / low income households..
Don't have to be too sore about these 'special' trainings. I'm sure you can do the same to your kids simply to teaching them maths and science concepts 1~2 yrs ahead of their level. I'm sure if they are able to understand P5/6 work when they are in P3, they will breeze thru GEP screening. No doubt abt it! -
tony:
But what if that particular student has been doing very well throughout the 3 yrs in GEP? Or he has consistently exhibit higher level of learning ability, but just NOT exam savvy?? Remember, GEP has a very diff curriculum and only start being 'drilled' for PSLE mid of P6 if I'm not wrong.Quite shocked and saddened by your revelations. It makes a mockery of the programme. But yes, my chief disagreement is with the lower cutoff for GEP kids via DSA. What are we teaching our kids? That it's alright not to work once you \"make it\" to some elitist group? I asked MOE and their reply was \"these kids CAN make it easily, but some won't\". If they won't then they shouldn't benefit, right? What better way to make them responsible for their education - by making them live the consequences of their true efforts?
Maybe if schools impose their individual cutoffs on all kids, then a lot of the reasons for training for GEP will disappear, and this national obsession will cool down...?
I thoroughly believe in differentiated instruction for gifted kids, but I just don't buy it that we have to reinforce this idea of elitism by giving them a discount to get into top schools!
Such info (GEP with 220) sure make good gossip for mainstreamers but we certainly don;t have enough information to say that the system is flawed. -

 I see what you're saying. There are two sides to the coin. At least this way, the kid is not disheartened because his strength is not overwhelmed by his weakness ...
A friend of mine who has kid like that : lazy to read through out his primary school year but very good in Maths. He got thru the 1st round but not the 2nd round in his GEP selection test some years back. He then got into a top IP school through DSA Maths domain. If he were to depend on PSLE result he would miss the top school cos English no good T-score got dragged down. Now in the IP programme his is English has improved a lot thru the language art programme, forced to read now mah. So I think the DSA thingy is helpful for kid like this since the GEP selection benefit kids who are not just smart but also must be good in English. -

haaa..leeven then next yr u will be very busy with psg of both new and old schools:grphug: my side too, my DS is really upset . Again today is last day and tomorrow the Annual prize giving day. My son has gone distributing his name card to all (including P4,P5 ). I didnt do any sharing gifts because I felt it might make him more emotional..
I think the most emotional day will be the 1st day of school term next year when they see new faces and get to think of the rest.
Me too, because I will miss the parents association gp. but still i promised we will help out as ex student's parents ..
..i a bit 'anti-social' so not in the psg..

hi Neko, if your dd has returned the report bk to the current sch..then u and dd will still got the chance to go to the school to collect the report bk during sch holiday. It will has to be handed to the new gep school when school reopen.. :lol:Today is dd's official last day in the current school (tmr is prize giving ceremony). Her friend's mum said her friend cried for very long last nite. I hv always thought dd wld finish her primary sch education there ... and then GEP just fell into our lap.
Oh my, this will be the last time I am driving to that sch. and I won't be seeing the now familiar faces at the sch gate anymore. feeling a bit sad
hmm ... i seem to be more sentimental than dd who is only 'a bit sad'. -

we did not return dd's report book cos her form teacher does not know whether we can get it back at all
dd came back home with lots of farewell presents ... she say she started to feel sad when everyone became teary and told her to get back the GEP form from MOE. one even 'chided' her for passing GEP, if not she will not hv to leave etc ...

Yes you do. Pick it up from SCGS during the holidays.
