Just sharing… my friend’s son will be in p5 next year, studying in Maris Stella. Her husband is dyslexic, so is his p6 boy and now his p4 boy is too. All is mild. P4 boy is "chinese" dyslexic… after tuition he got about 50+ … so mum is not going to get him exempted just yet… will try until p6 year. If I am not wrong the school helped them to refer to the child guidance clinic… I think the p6 boy is having slight problem in maths.

Don’t know whether this would help you… go and talk to the school and get them to refer you to child guidance clinic or go to the polyclinic and they can refer you to K K Children’s dept…

If I recall what my friend said… it’s the same kind of problem her p4 boy faced… he can’t recall the characters… etc… I am not an expert … this is just a sharing… hope this helps.

I've posted this topic 1 year ago...

After getting my son a Chinese tutor, his result improved from 32/100 to 60/100.(SA2)
Every mark counts and some improvement is so important to a boy who dislikes CHINESE..hope he can do better next year PSLE

        Hi Sally72,

wat you described 1 yyr ago sounded so much like what my DS1 is encountering now. I am also looking high and low, left and right for a solution. Please please share with us what you have done, other than finding him a good tutor.

        Regards

The tutor gave my son only 1 page of HW each day and slowly help him to \" get rid\" of his mindset >\" I hate Chinese\".

The tutor will not mark a \"X\" if he made any mistake, instead she will highlight the question and explain in English. The tutor will also share her thoughts with him and motivate him to study.

This tutor is ex-teacher but no taking anymore new student due to family commitment.

              how to improve chinese ?

I think parent could not force kids to study, but should let them to be interested in china at first.

listen music, story , study and play.

The chinese drama serials are a good idea! A lot of kids are interested in that. What I did for my nieces and nephews was that I would stick a black paper over the subtitles so they start getting used to the Mandarin rather than staying in their comfort zone, reading the English.

                  Hi,

Can parents share how you coach your child in Chinese ?
I am refering to children in P3 and above. Not preschool.

                  Regards

If you have the time to spare, you can motivate a 10-year old child to learn chinese by:

                    1) Conversing in Chinese with him
                    2) Watching Chinese TV News with him (10 - 10:30 pm) - Do not waste time on Chinese serial and get him addicted to TV.
                    3) Tune into Chinese channel while driving with him.
                    4) Sit next to him and go online to some children sites in Chinese (learn chinese words, learn chinese children songs, learn famous Chinese stories etc)
                    5) Bring him to China for leisure, immersion program, ecotour or even become a http://singapore.math-chinese-tutor.com/chua-thow-chiang/.
                    6) One of the most time consuming but very effective way is to sit next to him and watch Video on Chinese Classic. Assuming each video plays for 1.5 hour and each set comes with 50 pcs of DVD, it would take at least 75 hours of your time.)

If you do not have time to do this, consider getting a good Chinese tutor.

Tks very much for your tips.

Do you know of a good radio station in Chinese that is more kid friendly? Or fun Chinese websites? Sorry I'm very kantang.

Also, which assessment books do you recommend? I went to Popular and was confused by the huge array of choice.

                      TIA.

There aren't many Chinese radio stations in Singapore. Go to http://www.mediacorpradio.sg/ and check them out. You can even listen to some of them through internet. Try and decide which one is your taste.

Since you are kantang, Popular is the wrong place to go. You should vist the video rental shop instead. Go for Chinese Classic and enjoy the show with your child during this holiday. Try Red Cliff, Swordman type and your child will love it. http://singapore.math-chinese-tutor.com/contact-us/ and I will talk to you in Mandarin.
