Does anyone have any thoughts after receiving the Letter to Parents yesterday?

I was quite stunt to see that YZ implemented the Homework guidelines, ie. No certain homework on certain day. I thought it is inflexible and redundant. Teachers may be restricted by this which stop them from giving HW on certain day and instead pressurized to give more on certain days. Indeed, my child came back home also didn't feel comfortable. In fact, the children themselves already talked among themselves that they didn't like it. So, yet to see how it will turn out.

Every year the letter also said the new school shoes is a phase-in. However, at school, it was communicated to children that the new shoes and sorts is a MUST at ALL levels. I think YZ really needs to improve its communication within the school itself as well as to parents.

        Hi,

About the homework guidelines, I feel that it's just an idea about what to expect in case your child didn't tell you that there's homework, so you could monitor accordingly, so I feel it's quite good for working parents that didn't have much time to monitor too closely on their child's homework. So far, my child has homework almost everyday, didn't really follow too strictly.
As for the phrasing in of new school shoes, I don't think they'll get parents to change them, only to inform you that newly improved ones are out, so if the existing ones are spoiled, then please switch to the new ones.

        Hope it helps.

Not sure did I hear it correctly - The mean score for last yearPSLE is 211. Principal said the school overall result has improved . Above national level. But it didn't show the details of the individual subject. I' m more interested of how many A & A* the sch produced. At least can see how the whole cohort performed in each subject. Will the school be providing the details on its website?

          Hi magiccastle,

Actually initially I too have the same thinking as you, I always look out for school with high aggregate score for PSLE. But after some findings, I realised if the school has top student that scored 280, yes the student is good, maybe even gifted but that's just an individual self achieving that. Whereas if the school has achieved above average on national passes in all subjects, is even better, meaning the teaching and guidance is good for everyone to achieve that.

You may check out the past years results from here:

Thks samsel for the the link.

But it doesn’t show how the cohort perform in each subject . I m not interested in the top scorer . It merely reflect personal achievement of the student unless there is a number with such high score, then it is reflective that the school do play a part in their performance. Some Other schools do show an analysis of the number of A n A* in each subject. So at least u know the school is strong or weak in which subject. Then , at least as parent , u know the school standard in each subject. Eg .if the school consistently for the past few years only have a low % of A* or below 50% achieved A in english for the whole cohort, then u know the school is not strong in English . Then as parent, u know your child must work harder for this subject to do well.

Well, I m more concerned with the school

Well, I m more concerned whether the school will provide the right pace for each different student. Streaming come only in PR 4 ? In a pri 1 class , with different standard of students ,- some still struggling learning how to read yet some is already reading novels . The latter will find English lessons boring if the teacher is still teaching the basic phonic n simple reading.

Not sure will the school group the students by their ability even in pri 1 to cater to the different need of students?

If school doesn't follow the homework guideline, why has it implemented and confused parents? 😉

My point regarding the shoes and socks issue is that the communication to students and to parents are different. At school, the students were told to wear new shoes and socks regardless whether they are worn out or not. This was communicated differently in the letter to parents. I am glad that school is much understanding now.

                  Hi YZPS,

Can the school shows the % of quality pass ( A n A*) in each subject on it’s website. Showing merely the result of it’s top student for the past few years is not reflective of the school performance . As parents , we are more interested in the school performance in each subject for the past few years.

                    Hi its888me,

I guess you're right, they shouldn't confused parents, but also depend alot on what class they're in, usually top classes will have more to drill. 😓

                      Hi magiccastle,

Actually in Yangzheng, after P1, they'll start to stream them according to Mother tongue. They'll group better ones together.
Then the actual streaming will be at the end of P2, they'll stream according to Maths & English. So in P3, good ones will be placed under A & B classes while the rest will not be ranked. Eg. pupils that scored 95% & above for both Maths & English will go to P3A, pupils that scored 90% & above for both subjects will go to P3B, all others will go to P3C,D,E,F etc, not rated, meaning those who go E class doesn't mean that they're weaker than C class.
Then at end of P3, they'll stream again according to English & Science, no longer Maths cos for Maths, they've already recognised better ones to be placed in group 1, 2 etc.
Higher chinese will start in P5, so it's optional.
So this method of banding of class, help each individual student at their own pace. If the student is avg in Maths, she'll not feel so stressful if she's in other class rather than A & B class. For eg, a student from A class may score 49/50 but he's rank in class is only 12, while a student from D class scored 43/50, he's rank in class is top 3.

I personally find this type of method quite good, the only thing is they'll have to go to different classes for different subjects. Maybe will be confusing at first, but eventually they'll blend in.

Just like initially when my boy has to attend morning session on every wed, I feel that it's horrible, like upsetting their sleep pattern, but within a week, he's well adjusted. In fact, we like it, at least there's plenty of time in the afternoon for other activities on every wed. Anyway, next yr onwards, will be single session, so no diff! 🤷

As for P1 & P2, those who are struggling reading, Yangzheng do have Learning journeys, where parent volunteers will guide & read to them. They also have Buddy reading, where a buddy in the class that is better in reading will be assigned to a weaker reader to guide him along the way. :hi5:
