[Seng Kang] Primary Schools

Dear all,
Facing a very big dilemma now…Wishing to enlist the views of mommies here…
My dd has gained admission to SCGS through written test and interview round and she is currently enrolled with Nan Chiau Primary. So far all my acquaintances have told me that it will be wrong for me to give up the SCGS opportunity and stick to the original decision of Nan Chiau Primary due to reasons such as SCGS’s affiliation status, it being a premier girls’ school etc…
However, I do have some reservations primarily due to:
1) location: I stay at Sengkang and do not drive. School bus will come at around 5.45am. To relocate will be another big decision…
2) school culture: Personally have heard some grapevine on school culture…
3) affiliation: this can be a double-edged sword, will this cause complaceny in the kids ?
Am I really wasting such a great opportunity for my dd ? Am I giving up a big safety net for her in case she does not perform well at PSLE ? I am worried that any decision I made now will be regretted by me when her PSLE result is out 6 years down the road…
I can try my best to coach and groom my dd but frankly speaking, exam result is still a function of many factors, sometimes uncontrollable factors too…
Sigh…Pls kindly share your views with me.
Thanks.

I think you have asked similar question in another thread.
If really for your kid’s benefit, do you want her to take school bus at 5.45am for 6 years? Do you also consider what time she will reach home by school bus? -

No qualms about it, I'll choose SCGS soley base on the affiliation is good enough reason. There are many students from SC comes from all parts of Singapore, distance is NEVER and issue to them.

hi,
lwm99 - yes, that's why my ultimate decision is to stay put. I think our kids will be in the same school, so see you on this coming Monday
My girl is assigned to class 8 for the time being.
nani - I do agree that affiliation is a big big plus but after considering all the concerns on hand, will stick to Nan Chiau. Thanks for sharing
I will be working part-time from 2010 onwards, so hopefully with more time to spend with my girl, she will be better prepared for the formal education system and does not have to depend solely on affiiliation 6 years down the road.

Hi, just wish to clarify - I understand in Nan Chiau Primary, all pupils do Higher Chinese? What is the difference between Higher Chinese and normal Chinese? If Higher Chinese is indeed more difficult, how come they make all do Higher Chinese? Thanks if somebody can enlighten me.

I think that is the *best* thing you can do as a parent! No matter what, she will definitely benefit from your love for her. Also, a lot of studies do find that parental involvement is one of the key factors to children's academic success.
All the best to you! :celebrate: -

Fr my understanding during orientation, while e Higher Chinese portion is taught to all kids, it will not b tested. So I just take it as an enrichment bonus.

I would recommend you to stick with Nan Chiau Primary since you are staying at Sengkang. Transport would be a major problem as the child would be tired sticking to the school bus.Dear all,
