          Hi,

Does any of you have any recommendations for a SMO trainer?
          (beside those from Math Hub)
          TIA

The last time, individual participant could register on his/her own. Why this year registration must via school?

The sch that my kid is in doesnot allow us to register. Die die must be in their so called ACE programme. The teachers from these external agencies are so lousy and inexperience.

DS likes Maths. He has been attending Maths Hub for last 2years & participating in Maths competition. He doing well in normal Primary Maths syllabus. Next year he’ll be in Sec1. I intend to let him continue MathHub’s SMO program.

Issue now… DS Sci tutor has been urging him to sign up Maths tuition under the tutor (I had nicely declined previously). Apparently, the Sci tutor is also a Maths tutor, but only in normal Sch syllabus, not MO type.

So back to my confusion. Is SMO same/similar to Sec Maths? Or SMO a ‘higher’ level? Should I go for specifically MO-type teachers since DS can always approach DH in normal Maths.

DS is ending his Sci tuition as the tutor only teaches Pri Sci. Tutor offered to teach sec 1 but I’m considering cos I’m uncomfortable with the push to take up the Maths tuition. To me, motive & ethical is important.

              What’s your thots?

                Hi BeContented,

We are glad that your son has been with us for 2 years. Singapore Mathematical Olympiad (SMO) is different from Sec Maths. SMO, organised by the Singapore Mathematical Society is the largest and oldest mathematics competition in Singapore. The objective of the competition is to test the ingenuity and mathematical problem-solving ability of the participants and to discover and encourage mathematical talents in secondary schools and junior colleges in Singapore.

For more information regarding the competition, please visit
                http://sms.math.nus.edu.sg/Competitions/CompetitionHomePage.aspx

Following his PSLE, Maths Hub is offering a comprehensive program (SMO Junior / IP Math Module 1 &
                2) to prepare students who are keen in Mathematics for the Singapore Mathematical Olympiad (Junior
Section) and is also recommended to Primary 6 students (after their PSLE) who wish to do advanced
learning in the secondary Math syllabus. Secondary Math syllabus will start with algebra and analytical
geometry knowledge. The advance learning of some algebraic formulas, geometrical concepts and
techniques will help students build a strong foundation in the subject.

The list includes the more prominent ones with no order of recognition level. Different schools will look at different competitions and other factors (camps etc) when accepting students for DSA. The competitions in the list are what most students will participate in.

Does anyone know if the results of the final round of Mathlympics will be posted on the ACS(I) website? I understand there will be a award ceremony or something like that this Saturday (13 Oct) but I believed its only for the top scorers right?
