• RE: GEP 2012 - Screening & Selection

Lock:
The purpose of GEP is in the curriculum. That's my view. I don't choose GEP in hope that my kid will score in PSLE or get into prestigious Sch. If that's my purpose, DS will be better off in Rulang where they prepare the kids very well for PSLE.

I am of the opinion that since DS has been selected for GEP, that will mean he needs a different curriculum to expand his learning repertoire. Currently, in mainstream, kids are very drilled in the subjects to do well, there's v little 'real' learning taking place in the classroom. I hope I am not wrong to think that GEP curriculum allows the kids to explore and dig deeper into the subjects and that the learning journey is more enriched.
:goodpost:

Tho I have no business here cos my kids not in GEP, just like to share my view. My close friend's child was rather 'challenging' as a child. Has her own opinion, always asking questions, sensitive, everything gotta use reason for her to accept, loves reading, superb memory & then to like to speak to adults (小倧人). Back then we just found her different, later when she was selected for GEP despite leaving lotsa unanswered questions blank for Maths (the child's principle - dun guess if u dun know). And of course bored in class.
Initially, she was rather average in the GEP programme....2 years on, we could really see her blossom. Like what Lock mentioned, they are not drilled for PSLE, they are taught to think & analyse higher stuff ie. real learning, problem solving etc. The child is now rather happy, I believe that's because intellectually she has avenues to turn to. Guess sometimes as adults, most of us may not have the patience or too busy to engage in the topics (or sometimes the depth level) with these small kids

I remembered how the child was not keen to play with similar age kids & yet unable to find adults cos we are always chatting & chilling & leaving the kids to play amongst themselves. So this child, is often alone in a corner reading. Now she is able to blend in better & her quest for knowledge is definitely still strong. Recently she spoke about trade barriers, all of us flipped πŸ˜‰

So my view, a good programme for those suitable πŸ˜‰
Nygh is not a private sxhool, it is only independent school. Majority of the fund comes from the government.

678Yess:
what is done these two sxhool needs to be answerable to the general public. I was saying the policy adopted by nygh is not fair to each applicant. Since they are funded by tax payer money through, every applicant shd be treated equally.Meritocarcy is the fundamental of our society.
And therefore it should be commended for following the spirit of MOE policies, which is to look beyond a narrow view of education. Things like character, diversity, mixed ability classes etc.

NYGH is just recognizing what parents already know - that not all primary schools are equal. I do not see anything wrong with NYGH's approach to DSA.

678Yess, in public forum, you are free to express your view. You had been throwing stones at Mdm Heng & NYGH for almost a year and all KSP's parents heard you.

Turning the clock back to Aug last year, if, I say IF, your dd was given CO from both NYGH and RGS, which would you choose?
678Yess:
My aim was to express how I and some of those I knew felt about the whole DSA process I have been through with NYGH, and critically reflecting about it.
Yeah. I know of a mommy who was critically reflecting about NYGH DSA process too. Her DD DSA to 4 schools, received 3COs including from her top choice RGS, but not granted interview by NYGH. She went round describing the whole NYGH DSA process - from interviewers' profile, student profile, what was discussed in the special tea session, the interview questions to different applicants, which group was selected/given CO as it was a pre-fixed, how the different applicants fare against each other.....basically the message was....DSA process in NYGH was unfair.
I was quite 'amazed' how she managed to extrapolate from the few datapoints she might have......

IMO, choose a school that the child fits......my DD didn't get her CO from NYGH either.....we were devastated, had our ego bruised....but she's now happily studying in NYGH. It's not a perfect place & there will still be grouses....but every school will have their pros and cons.

• RE: Negative Ions Products

Years ago I bought an air filter that produces negative ion too. But din feel much diff and after that one spoilt, din get any replacement.

My dad was given a pj set also, he wore it diligently for quite some time but can't sense any effect. All these are sooooo 'subtle', but yet those testimonial make it sound like we dun need doctors and dermatologist anymore after using it. All the 'sure die' examples all survived. I am still skeptical. πŸ˜“

Been hearing about it but not really a believer.

However, as a relative is unwell and is asking for it, like to see if anyone in KSP has tried or knew of people who did and what’s the review.
Eg. Hat, clothing, mattress, blankets, bracelets etc.

Thanks.

• RE: Is it healthy to drink 1 litre of pasteurised milk everyday?

Around 4yr old onwards, both my kids stopped powdered milk & started pasteurized milk. Typically each takes about 0.75L per day (3 cups @ Morning, afternoon, night). So they did so for about 8 years until Secondary Sch. Right now they still drink minimum 2 cups a day. So far no issues. The boy is tall and lanky. The girl is average height but above average weight. πŸ˜‰ So I guess it all depends on what other stuff they take on top of the milk. πŸ™‚
Yes, I second the Xiaomi powerbanks. Charges really fast, and also very fast to recharge. What's even better... you can actually charge the powerbank while it charges your devices. That's something that most other powerbanks don't do. A single 10,000maH battery can recharge my Note 5 about twice from about 20% full.

Agree it charges real fast, but something weird happened to my iphone 6+ when I started using it.
Was away on holiday so used the powerbank. The phone started hanging & would suddenly power off by itself at about 20% battery life while I was taking pics. Despite using a fully charged powerbank, the phone couldn't start at all for the next 30-60mins. So throughout the trip, I faced that problem whenever I use the powerbank.

Stopped using it & I have not hit those issues.

Well, my sis's phone powered off when we were overseas I think because it was too cold.
There's 7 iPhones within the group. And mine is one of the newest .... (Less than 1 year) ..... And it's not that cold too. So quite unlikely the cause.
I have bought my iPhone to colder / winter places before .... Din hit that problem too.

• RE: All About Dental

DingDing70:
Hi

Is it uncommon to have extractions after braces are on? I called to enquire and learnt that the braces will be put on for a few months prior to extractions (if any). Anyone here has been through that before?

I read that usually the extractions will be done before putting on the braces.

Thanks.
I think perhaps depend on situation?
If your teeth are already overcrowded (eg. with overlapping or already crooked with no space), extraction is usually required b4 braces. For some, maybe only some adjustment required and orthodontist will monitor before deciding.
For my son, he started with some simple adjustment without extractions for upper jaw - to push a badly protruding tooth down. Orthodontist did mention due to fact they are still growing kids, the jawline is still expanding. After 1+ year, he extracted 4 teeth to start the full proper braces. My daughter extracted 4 before starting her braces.

But I'm just curious, you mentioned you call. So perhaps the reply is just a generic one cos some cases may be really really mild type, just to beautify. Only upon consultation would the orthodontist be able to provide more specific advice.
