With regards to English (whether spoken or written), my husband and I do speak some Singlish at home… cannot help it at times. But I do try to correct the kids when they do speak wrong English and also explain to them some terms are colloquial only.


Thank you all for sharing your experiences. It has been very enlightening for me. Hopefully as time pass and with more effort on my part, they will learn to read more!

I always make sure I keep my child in suspend so tt they would read more.

I grew up on Tin Tin and Asterix, not sure I understood the words, but it made me want to ‘read’ books…

I think the recent Stella program, and show and tell in school is very useful.

The 2nd hand stores at Bras Basah Complex usually have copies. Or try the libraries.

library cant.. it'll take too long to read... no other source besides bras basah ? so far for me.. sigh

Do they like electronic stuff like computers and tablets? How about buying a ereader for them to read from? It is something new and intriguing to them and they might view it differently from physical books. If you get a Kindle (from Amazon), the cost is really just the ereader itself. Cos there is tons of free books on the Amazon site and online. I own a Kindle Touch and has downloaded many books suitable for kids.

thanks to the ebook thread, i have borrowed one ebook and uploaded it onto my not-so-good tablet (no brand...lousy battery). my boy now has 20 days left to finish his Roald Dahl book. i like the dictionary feature as i am usually lost for words when he approached me to ask about a certain word's meaning. another feature i like is that i can enlarge the font size so that what looks so small on real book (which kindof scares off my little one) looks big and managable on the tablet. the thickness of the book is also somewhat 'concealed' when compared physical book with ebook. if he can finish this book and express further interest, i may consider the Kindle Touch (have yet to read about it!) if it has the dictionary tool as well. he finished 4 chapters in 2 days. very encouraging for me as he usually put aside thick books with small fonts and zoom straight into non-fiction reading (with pictures).

that's great! looks like it is working out well for your boy. i didnt think about the thickness part. its very true. they dun get turn off by the thickness.


The Kindle Touch has the dictionary feature. In fact, all Kindles does. You can even choose which dictionary to point it to. I chose Oxford. There is other great features like highlighting (u can choose to print out these notes), bookmark, make notes. You can even get it to read to you. The best part is the battery 1-2mths and it is ultra light (allows me to buy along in my handbag)! It is also not tiring on the eyes to read a Kindle becos there is no back-lighting like most tablet.

Amazon has since stopped selling the Touch but just released a newer model called the Kindle Paperwhite. But if you prefer the Touch, it is still avail thru local websites and forums. I got it off a buyer in a local forum brand new. If the main purpose is reading, I will not advise the Kindle Fire. That is more a tablet. Heavy and has back-lighting. Other features like gaming and music also serves to distract the reading of books.
