ACS GEP teachers do not believe in tuition for GEP students. They will encourage students to study on their own as the classroom interaction, teacher support, peer co-operation and study materials should be enough for a student to do well provided the student is disciplined in studies, does the projects well, reads widely, prepared to ask questions when does not know how to do a question, etc. GEP is already an enriched program which is what Learning Lab, Mind Stretcher, Tien Hsia etc. all claim to be. These provide "enrichment" so the logic is if you are enriched already in GEP then no need for such programs.

I was hoping that GE branch will give us the assurance that GEP kids do not need any tuition and the GEP programme itself is good enough to meet the kids’ needs once they are in it.

In the previous GEP briefing in 2010 that was specifically mentioned. I do not believe that the position has changed as the ACS GEP teachers continue to maintain this position with the boys currently in P4, P5 & P6. They are surprised that GE boys go for tuition as that appears contradictory to the whole philosophy of the GE program which is to help realize the potential of bright children. As the kids are already identified as bright what is the

It is up to us to decide how much free time we want to let our child to have. Remember, don over stretch your kids.

To me, tuition & enrichment are different. Tuition repeat what the school is teaching, enrichment teach something out of the school curriculum. If GEP programme is like enrichment, then really don’t need for enrichment outside anymore. :boogie: -
I guess there will be some schools where it is more competitive and if the parents feel that since it is so difficult to get ahead there and have the edge in order to do better or get chosen for competitions over the rest, then students in those schools will inevitably need more \"tuition\" to help them propel themselves forward.
If the school is not so competitive maybe the need for \"tuition\" is less.
There are others who are not so good in Mother Tongue (which was not tested for entry into GEP), so there might be many who have \"tuition\" in this subject.
I actually asked the kids at the booth if they have \"tuition\".
Many more mentioned Mother tongue than other subjects. -

To me, it really boils down to the parents. If the parents are 'KIASU', irregardless whether GEP or NOT, their kids will be sent to Tuition or Enrichment classes. Perhaps it is because they are busy working and have no time to coach their kids. There are some that send their kids becos as they may be scoring ard 75 marks, which I understand is the passing mark. The extra Tuition or Enrichment is really to push them to the AVERAGE level. Parents and kids have to manage their expectations that once in GEP as they can no longer be the Top 3/5 in class (which probably they are used to) because they are pitting themselves against the equivalent/stronger classmates. HMT is really a stumbling block for many kids becos most of us communicates verbally and writing in English. The tuition/enrichment is to make sure they keep their head above the water. :imdrowning: Like Kabby, the story is the same...no other tuition except for MT. -
