      mincy,

I think it is OK to let her off, since this is the first time she did it. Anyone can make mistake, the important thing is whether the maid can learn from the mistake and not do it again.

      winth,
Sorry to hear about what happened. All our clothes/bedsheets are washed in the washing machine, so I know exactly how many times they are rinsed. My maid only handwash her own clothes.

My previous agency charge me only $35 to send a maid to the airport.

Yes it is not cheap to have a maid. And it is not easy to find a good maid. We have to be prepared to change until we find a good maid. And changing maids cost a lot of money.

After reading all these posts, I think I would spent more money on appliances like dish washer, dryer, i-robot etc to help my wife with the housework. At least I dun have to handle the HR issues.

Just to share a story, my relative's maid had ended her contract after working for my relative for 6 years. Because she was a good maid, my relative decided to give us a few hundreds extra as a gratuity/bonus. After the maid left, my relative found $2k missing from her drawer and it appeared pretty cleared that the maid had stolen it before she left.

It's unfortunate that we are all hearing more bad news than good ones. So maybe it's better to spend money on advanced appliances instead. 🙂

            Oh heutistmeintag, you’re sure right.

On the day when she left, I gave my maid extra S$50 to sort of ‘bribe’ her when I gave her only 1 hour notice. We felt that it was the best way to prevent all kinds of drama and action-pack when we need to make her leave our house. Plus I’ve got 2 young children at home. So safety first.

S$50 did do the job to make her pack and leave our house quietly, somemore with tears in her eyes and she asked to hug me and the kids. She even said she’s gonna miss us.

HA! Once outside the house (literally outside our house), her face went all black. Didn’t even say a single word to us. My brother had to carry her luggage all the way to the maid agency and without a word of thanks. And she looked like she didn’t know us. At the agency, she was already talking to her fellow maids there and when I turned around to look at her, she didn’t even bother to look at me. I REALLY REGRETTED GIVING HER THAT entire S$50 that my husband instructed me to give her. Maybe S$20 might have done the job. :x

There are still many tasks which machines cannot help to do, but only humans can. Any machines to scrub the toilet ? Wipe table tops ? There are many clothes which cannot be put into the washing machine and dryer. You also will not trust machines to look after your baby when you are busy, right ?

Actually if the husband is able to do all the housework, then there will be no need for a maid. I know of a full time working mommy whose hubby does all the housework, so she has time to teach her kids after work.

But how many husbands can do housework ? Many working mommies have to do housework after a full day of hard work in the office. Getting a good maid to help out is very important when the hubby cannot help.

We cannot generalize and say that all maids are bad. There are many maids who are very hardworking and kind hearted. Whether you get a good maid or not, depends on your luck. I am not so lucky, so I have to change 8 times before I get my current maid. I have no complains about her.

I think the most important thing is to know how to manage a maid. We have to be very strict with the maid right from the first day. It is very important to spell out all house rules and expectations to the maid.

I was extremely disappointed with my maid yesterday. I ordered grocery from NTUC fairprice and told them to delivery after 7pm. I got home at 7.15pm and the delivery was done. My maid opened the door and let the delivery man in.

She was alone with my 7 month son. I told her specifically not to open door to strangers and that morning I reminded her again that anything she is not sure, to call me. My telephone is for her to call, not to keep.

She told me she ignored the knocking on the door until my neighbour came to ask her open the door, so she obeyed. I was extremely angry. Am I overreacting? I think it is a very big mistake.

First she should not open door to strangers
Second I did not preinform her that there will be grocerty delivery
Third She did not call me despite me repeatedly told her to call me when she is unsure of anything
Fourth She obeyed my neighbour request rather than my instruction

I think it is a very big mistake and I will send her home. This is the third time she disobeyed my instruction and failed to call me. Any comment/advice? Am I overreacting? 😐

Worse things have happen so no need to jump at that. My maid wasn't in-time to pick my gal up at the guardhouse when she came home. School bus driver just left her with the guard. Terrible right? What if the guard molested her?

I think just talk to her nicely. Even we can't perform at 100% to her bosses what more the maid?

Like I said, this is the 3rd time when a situation happen and she should be calling me to check which she did not. She is just plain stubborn and refused to obey my instruction. She think she very clever and takes thing into her own hand.

                    Mistake 1:
Rice run out. My MIL told her to call me she ignored. Next morning she told me to give her the money, she will go buy the rice. I wish she is that capable but she get lost the minute she step out of my housE!

                    Mistake 2:
On monday this week, my son was not well in the morning. I called home late morning, she said nothing. She waited till I reach home at night then she told me. I asked her why tell me so late, she said don’t want to disturb me when I at work. But I told her repeatedly that she can call me anytime and assured her that I will not be angry with her.

                    Mistake 3:
As stated above, the grocery delivery.

I feel that it is big mistake because my son is not safe with her. Even when my MIL is in, the officer came to my house wanting to make inspection for mosquito, my MIL call me to let me know. She is VERY VERY STUBBORN. I am pretty certain, given her character, she will still take things into her own hand and not call me when the next situation happen again.

Sigh! My maid too. My daughter had urinarl tract infection. She didn't even tell me that my gal got pain whilst passing urine. My gal had to tell me herself.
How long have you had her for? These maids find it diffcult to understand our way of thinking. They probably have very lax standards back home and think that we are super uptight.
