How much do you spend on the kids' tuition/enrichments?

Chinese at berries and tien hsia for preschoolers are about $350-$400 per quarter. Phonics/English classes are about $390 a $500+ depending on which service provider u go to. Math classes are around $500.


There is little point knowing how much these classes cost, but that’s my take. When I first sought out enrichment classes, I was "need" oriented. Eg I feel that I can’t teach Chinese and phonics, so I send my kid to classes. When I zoom in what I want, I google/ read forum pages to shortlist the potential schools. But then, I appreciate that you may have budget constraints.

DS only has Chinese enrichment and Chinese writing classes. Haven’t started on other subjects. We also just signed up for a swimming class.


DD just started on phonics classes.

Expenditure slightly over $500/month for these 2 kids so far.

For the non-essential like ballet / piano / art / abacus etc, I will expose them to it but if they show no real interest or aptitude for it, I take them out.


DS learnt piano for a month and said it was boring. I just withdrew him. Just don’t buy the huge piano too soon. I was prepared and just borrowed a casiotone from his cousin. As for DD, she said she wanted ballet so badly so I signed her up for a free trial at Crestar. She found it boring as well and we didn’t sign up for the actual classes.

Art classes, we sent DS to those at CCs so it was really cheap. We stopped once we needed the time for Chinese enrichment classes. We also stopped his English phonics classes once he could read reasonably well. Didn’t want to overload him and we certainly did not want to be weekend chauffeurs.

I like that you take out/replace with another enrichment when your children show no interest etc. I try to be like that too. :hugs: DS learnt piano at Inspiration music school 3years ago and we realized that he learnt nothing much (maybe 2 kiddish tunes after a year) because the very young teacher played with him a lot and also because we are really not the sort who made him practice his piano. DD is asking for piano lessons but I am not sure how serious she is at 3yo so will wait and see. We don't have a piano too. I remember dh paid around $700 for a Yamaha keyboard that has similar \"feel\" and weight for the keys.

I don’t know if I shd laugh or cry - my kid hardly drops out of his classes. To make things worst, he would request for more. How to slot into his schedule?! My take is, kid’s should be enriched with such classes but they should have sufficient rest time, play time, dream time. Which is why, I sign him up for all the 4 enrichment classes made available in his childcare centre - speech and drama, 2 sports related classes and gym. These are built into the normal office hours so my kid won’t need to shutter around during the weekends. Wish To have the time for art classes…

Your boy is smart lah. You did a good job coaching him yourself. No need extra tuition if he can manage. My boy is quite lazy and defiant so only an external party can make him do work. I will also review his SA1 results for Maths. If it goes down, I'll send him to Kumon.
