Hi, appreciate clarification on GCE O level Higher Chinese 2013.

The fan wei given for compo is : Ji su wen, yi lun wen and miao xie wen. Is there a change in the fan wei in 2013? Is there anymore pao zhang pao dao? Thanks.

hi, does any one know the criteria to get into higher chinese in sec?like must u get top how many percent or something....

        The criteria is:

-You have to be in the top 10% of your primary school PSLE results.
-Be in the 11-30% range of your primary school PSLE results with either an A* in CL or Merit in HCL.

I took up HCL for secondary one. Dk if it's a good choice :?

It should be top 10% of the national PSLE cohort & not just base on your primary school. Same go to the 11-30%.

Why do you send your kids to higher Chinese tuition? My boy did normal Chinese in pri school & he has to do higher Chinese in Sec 1 this year. He is currently attending lesson at Jiang. However, the standard is too high & he has difficulties understands what the teacher taught. We are trying to look for a more suitable tuition centre for him.

Any recommened HCL tuition centre which the students are mainly from IP programmes?

You can try Jiang at Fu Lu Shou. However, their weekend classes are quite big.

My DS is taking Higher Chinese. Am I right that one has to sit for Normal Chinese "0" level too? Then after that sit for Higher Chinese "O" Level?

Is yours a mainstream school? If so, yes. CL 'O' levels at Sec 3 followed by HCL 'O' levels at Sec 4, provided minimum grade is met for CL.

                      Hi everyone

Just to check if it is necessary to have separate tuitions for Higher Chinese and Chinese in Secondary School. Do they have a lot of difference besides the standard being higher in Higher Chinese?

                      Really appreciate advices. Thank You!
                      Hello,

No, I do not think it is necessary, and I recommend going for the Higher Chinese one instead of the normal one. Other than standard wise, there is not that much of a difference, HCL students will also be sitting for the Normal Chinese paper in O levels.

The difference in standard between Normal Chinese and HCL is really big so if you go for Normal Chinese tuition instead of the HCL one, even though they are both Chinese, you may not learn things at the HCL level. However, if your foundation in Chinese is not that strong, it will be better to go for Normal Chinese tuition and slowly learn from there.

                      -

However, personally I do not think having tuition for Chinese is necessary unless you really really cannot understand and is really really struggling. Getting a low grade in Sec 1 for HCL is very normal, there was only 1 A2 and some B3 in my class, the rest are around B4 - C6, 2 or 3 people failed.

I got a C6 for HCL in CA1 but am improving slowly on my own without tuition. ^^
