• RE: All About Piano Theory Examinations

      Hi.

      May i know if anyone who took the oct theory exams already received your mark sheet? I received the results from the system but still hadn’t received the mark sheet via mail and was wondering if it had been lost.

      Thanks!

    • RE: Methodist Girls' School (Secondary)

      Hi. My dd has accepted MGS’ dsa offer for the IB prog. I was looking through the booklist and realised quite alot of big books to buy. Wondering if it is necc to buy all the books as the experience from my elder child’s school ( different sch) is that some of the textbooks could literally be untouched at the end of the one year. Can anyone advise, based on your dd’s experience, which texts must buy and which can be omited for the time being?

      Thanks!

      Hi,

      Can I check if students are still required to obtain calculator stickers before the ‘A’ level exams?

      Thanks!
p5 would be more appropriate to take NPL to plan and coach. if there are any hiccups, there is still time. p6 would be a super packed 9 months. p5 is also a year new topics are introduced and there is a steep learning curve. manage p5 well so that p6 will not be so stressful.

      Yes I fully agree with you. That's why i suggest p5 to my boss. But she does not understand the rationale and feels that I am very KS. In fact, she told me that I will drive my son crazy if I stay at home to coach him. :siao:

      There will always be people like that. Even now, after I stopped work for a year, my boss/ex-boss will ask if DS results have improved after I became a SAHM. But I am very happy that I stopped at the end of DS P4. Although his academic results have not improved significantly, his attitude towards work has improved substantially. And that is more important to DH & I. At least, he's able to do the work I set for him when I'm not around, unlike previously when he'll just give me a flippant answer of \"I forgot\".

      Even if he does not perform well in his PSLE next year, I will know that it is not for want of effort by him. And that I supported him fully.
Ditto to that! :xedfingers:

      bangs, your unpaid leave is very well put to use n I am sure both you n your son will reap benefits.

      The bottomline of parents taking unpaid leave is to use the time effectively - ie, work with your child on his/her weak areas n set up a daily routine. If you take leave n not diligent enuf to push the child, then it will really be wasted. In other words, spend quality time with your kid as one year passes by very quickly if you don't realise it.

      That's my humble opinion.
      Thanks zbear. Yes, effective time management is very important for the P6 year as the amount of schoolwork given could be very staggering. During my son's holidays, he was working from morning to evening with very little break and yet, only just managed to finish the work set (mainly school work). However, he is also a slow worker and takes a long time to get started and \"warmed up\". I helped him ensure time management and scheduling :?:

      I started my NPL during the end of year hols Given the choice, I would do it all over again. It may or may not have any impact on his results (we will know on Friday :nailbite: ) but my bond with my DS is stronger than ever and being witness to how he diligently ploughed through the PSLE year makes me so glad that I took the plunge.

      Yes,academics is important but secondary to the efforts put in for the exams. As a mother, I do not want to regret one day that I was not there for my kids during the crucial milestone. I would like to think that whatever the results may be,I have tried my best. Even if academics wise may not improve , I'm sure the bonding will be stronger than ever,just like in your case.

      I know when tmr comes, you will be proud of your son when he stands to receive his results. I think when the day comes for me, I'll be proud for both of us too.

      Thanks ctrlaltdel. Yes, today, I feel at peace. Not because I am confident of his performance (I am not) but because I know as a mom, I have tried my best and so has he. So, we will move on with whatever we have and start on a clean slate again from tomorrow onwards.

      Incidentally, as for the discussion on whether NPL for P5 or P6 or both, I felt that in my case, P6 was the best decision for us. I think P5 and P6 would have been too draining for me (possibly for him too), but then again, each case is different and you know your child (and yourself) the best.

    • RE: To take unpaid leave in P5 or P6 for PSLE ?

      Hi,

      I am a mom who took NPL during my DS's PSLE this year, so this topic really resonates with me.

      I started my NPL during the end of year hols at P5, so I could help work on his weaknesses and strengthen foundations before P6 started. When P6 started, I found that my job was really to manage his schedule and workload. His pace of working was (and still is) slow and I tried to hurry him, but I realised earlier on that that is the way he works and his rhythm, so can't really up the pace too much.

      Some areas which we worked on in the P6 year was:

      - Discipline and Balance. Once he reached home, had lunch and a little break, we would start the afternoon revision time/homework time without delay. If left alone, sometimes, he would get distracted by all the other things and would leave homework till just before I returned, which was not ideal, considering the huge amounts.

      When we had completed the afternoon programme, he was almost always rewarded with 1/2 to 1 hour of sports time e.g. basketball, badminton etc which he always looked forward to. I think he got a lot more exercise during the PSLE year and it helped him relieve his stress, fatigue and gave balance to his life.

      - Plug gaps. I realised that in the P6 year, there were many gaps that I needed to plug in terms of exam strategies (e.g. keeping strictly to time for papers), answering techniques (e.g. comprehension, Science OE) etc. I could think through and research on the ways of helping him in the morning while he was in school, and when he came back in the afternoons, I was refreshed and able to help him. He constantly needed reminders and practice on these skills. Sometimes, he would regress despite being taught the skills, maybe due to the huge workload (hence, the hurry to finish the work rather than put in good quality work) and the fact that I was at home during this time helped me to be alert and quickly plug the gaps as soon as they happened.

      - Moral Support. I think the P6 year was a stressful time for them, as well as for the parents (at least, it was for me!). Hence, it was good for me to be home to boil the soups, cook his favourite dishes and just listen to him on his school days immediately after he returned from school.

      Stopping work is never easy and there are always many considerations. I went through the whole process, did some planning and once my NPL started, all these issues never popped into my mind for that one year. Given the choice, I would do it all over again. It may or may not have any impact on his results (we will know on Friday :nailbite: ) but my bond with my DS is stronger than ever and being witness to how he diligently ploughed through the PSLE year makes me so glad that I took the plunge.

      Hi, Pl help! Thanks!

      Fatimah spent 1/6 of her salary and an additional $200 on a washing machine. She then spent 3/5 of the remaining money and an additional $300 on an oven. Given that she was left with $440, how much was her salary?

      Fatimah's salary ...................[------------][------------][------------][------------][------------][------------]
      Cost of a washing machine ......[------------][--200-]
      Remaining money.........................................[----------][-----------][----------][----------][----------]
      Cost of an oven...........................................[----------][-----------][----------][--300--]
      Left.......................................................................................................[---- 440 ---]

      [----------][-----------] --> 300 + 440 = 740
      [----------] --> 740/2 = 370
      5*[----------] --> 5*370 = 1850

      5*[------------] --> 200 + 1850 = 2050
      [------------] --> 2050/5 = 410
      6*[------------] --> 6*410 = 2460

      Fatimah's salary --> $2460

      Hi jieheng,

      Many thanks!
