    • RE: Maths Assessment Books

Agree with what Janet88 had mentioned.

I have been repeating this reminder to my students ( especially before exams) that they have to write down their step by step workings instead of just writing their answers on their model drawings or geometry diagrams.
Students tend to forget this easily when they have a calculator in hands. If there are no written workings, method marks would not be given.

As for the lower primary levels Maths, workings done at the side , right hand column, would not be considered as \" real workings\". Teachers would deduct marks when number sentences are not clearly written on the paper. Please remind your kids about this.

Should your kids need help for a 1-1 maths tutor, please click on the below thread link to find out more about my tutoring service offered. I provide affordable, 1-1 private tutoring at my residence. Limited time slots though, weekday afternoons only. Thank you.

    • RE: 2016 PSLE Discussions (Born in 2004)

      Iansharac:
      Good morning, Parents.

Will kids be penalized if they did the PSLE Math Paper 2 questions mostly in pencil?

DD did her Math paper mostly in pencil and she is now worrying that she might be penalized.

      Thanks all in advance.
Dont worry, your daughter will not be penalised by writing in pencil for PSLE Maths Paper 2.

Over the years, I have seen some of my students who still prefer to use pencils for word problems.

    • RE: All about Transferring to Other Primary Schools

For parents looking to transfer their children to another primary school, the best time (year) would be when the child is in P3.

Call up the school you wish to transfer to and put in your child’s name in the waiting list. The transfer could take place for the next academic year of P4 where schools would have some movement of existing pupils due to being selected for GEP. (for non GEP primary schools)

Of course, the academic results of your child matters alot for a successful transfer.

    • RE: Maths Assessment Books

There are quite a number of good maths assessments books available. One of them, I have been using is Step by Step by EPH. The author of this book had years of experience dealing with GEP. What I like about this book is that it is arranged topics by topics. It includes basic level, a recall and knowledge application section of basic concepts, as well as practices for higher difficulty level.

Maths assessment books like Fan Maths Process skills and books written by Andrew Er and Fabian Ng are recommended for practices of word problems. Parents who wish to teach your kids at home can consider Fan Maths Teach N Learn.

Onsponge Conquer Problem sums is a good practice book for solving word problems. But some of the questions are targeted for students of above average/higher ability. Hence, parents need to choose assessment books which are appropriate to their kids' ability as not to demoralise them.

Besides creating my own customised worksheets, tailored for 1-1 private coaching, I also make use of the above books (not limiting to the above mentioned books) to reinforce the maths concepts during my lessons.

    • RE: Depressed over p3 results

      Dear Parents,

Being a 1 to 1 private and experienced lady tutor, I am able to focus and work on individual student areas of weaknesses. This works best for academically weaker kids since it is not possible in a large class size.

High ability kids too benefit from my 1 to 1 tutoring. For HA kids, I teach them ahead of the school curriculum and expose them to higher order thinking questions to further enhance their thinking skills.

I believe every child has different learning ability. Amongst my students, I have one who was diagnosed ADHD. This student has very short attention span, problem with focusing and keeps forgetting things which have been taught. Currently in P4, he came to me last year. He used to fail his maths but last SA2 exam, under my dedicate teachings, he managed to do decently well in Maths and scored well for Science. ( I welcome parents to vertify my students' results slips when their kids attend my lessons).

If your child needs help in his or her studies, kindly drop me an email bedoktutor@gmail.com I am confident that I can help.

      Thank you for viewing.

      Ms Chan

Do you all typically conduct face to face interview of the tutor before hiring him/her?

How about asking for a trial lesson to see your DC click with tutor or not?

A phone interview would probably be more practical than meeting up. In my instance, I would definitely encourage parents to let their child have a trial lesson with me before deciding. After all, one can always toot his horns extremely loud and claim he is a darn excellent specimen of a tutor (words are plain cheap), yet underperform during actual coaching sessions.

      Peace.

Yes, a tele- interview would be more practical as arrangements for meet-up is difficult due to different schedule between tutors and parents.

During a tele- interview, parents can find out more about the tutor, ask about how the lessons are conducted and get all his or her concerns / questions addressed.

I welcome parents who are unsure of my 1 to 1 tutoring service to have a trial lesson as I can understand their valid concerns. If for whatever reason/s, parents do not wish to continue with the tuition, they just pay for 1 lesson, no other hidden cost. Since I am not doing group tuitions, so sorry that I cant provide a free trial lesson.

Parents who are keen in my tutoring lessons can click on the link to get more details. Thank you for viewing.
