      Thanks!

    • RE: How to tell if a child is gifted?

      Guys,

Get a gripe. Many parents tend to think that their own kid is \"gifted\" (this happens in other countries as well). It doesn't take advanced knowledge of statistics to figure out that, if every parent thinks his or her children are above average, close to half of them must be wrong. So it shouldn't come as a surprise to any parent that, despite their kids' talking early or producing amazing art or asking questions you can't answer or what-have-you, their kids are not necessarily gifted.

It is really ok for a kid to be ordinary.

      Hi All,

After checking with the friends who gave the AEIS exam (which cost $700 by MOE) 9/10 students were not able to get a seat in the local school. Seems they are making very difficult for the foreigners to survive in Singapore. Why make the kid suffer to get proper education ?
      AJAJ,

It is completely justifiable and logical for the government to give priority to S'porean kids. As it is, many S'poreans kids find it hard to get into primary school of their choice.

As a foreigner, you can always put you kids in international schools. You should have done your homework (finding out more about kids education scene here) before coming to work here. Nobody owes your kid a \"proper education\".

      Hi parents,

I am a Year 4 student from RGS who chanced across this thread, and would hence like to recommend my Chinese tutor whom I had been under for the past 5 years. She is very patient and I really like her teaching style, because she will cater her lessons in accordance to the students requirements.

She conduct lessons both in small groups of maximum 6..........................
How could you have \"chanced across this thread\" when you registered with KS Parents in NOv 2014 and posted the above 2 years later in 2016?

I would urge all tutors not to advertise their services here by pretending to be someone else that they aren't.

For P6s, it is natural that many parents focus on comparing the Y1-Y4 programs. I feel it is equally important to look at Year 5-6 program leading up to the A level exams. For IP students who are not taking O levels, the A levels (or IB) results will be be used for university admission. Heard from an insider source that in terms of A level results, HCI is distant second behind RI (in past years). A level results is of course only one aspect, but it reflects the strength of the Y5-6 program & quality of teaching. The schools released press releases on their A level results on their websites so that is another point for research.

Here is 2016 A level results from school website
RI had better top student but overall A level seems not much difference.

Must say that it is pretty impressive that HCI students actually got into (and chose) the top Chinese universities such as Fudan, Tsinghua and Peking. The opportunity to network with the elite Chinese at those universities will be invaluable for the students.

Not sure about past years, but for 2017 DSA, HCI has imposed a very high standard for Maths & Science domains. Must be gold or platinum winners at Olympiads in order to be even shortlisted for HDP. Thus, there will have many top-calibre Maths/Science students to spur their schoolmates. Additionally, HCI has traditionally been known to strongly promote Chinese culture, language and values, which (in the current China era) is a big plus point. So I guess (just a guess) HCI has an edge over RI in terms of DSA acceptance.

I don't think HCI was ever a \"distant second\" in past years' A Level performance. These 2 schools have always been very close in terms of academic performance. To me, HCI has plus point in inculcating Chinese culture/values.

Hmmm me thinks RI still enjoys an edge in terms of reputation and prestige among many parents and is the preferred choice especially for most top non-Chinese kids and their parents.

I was (logically) referring to Chinese-speaking applicants. Agree with you on non-Chinese-speaking DSAers, but they also have an equally strong (if not stronger) choice in the form of ACS. Again, just a view.
