    • RE: Crescent Girls' School

Hi parents and students of Crescent Girls, can you pls share your advice to me? My girl is outgoing and active. She talks and makes lots of friends. Academic wise ok. Not very self motivated and not very hard working. Estimated AL~ 11 or 12.

I doubt if her characters would fit in to the Crescent Girls’ culture, especially she is not the sit quietly type and not self driven in study. Thanks.

I think its a MCQ question.

My girl thinks that it is liquid expanding. The question provided a picture of a bun with the liquid flowing out via a hole near the top of the bun, so she believes that it is the liquid that expanded and flowed out of the bun. Her logic is that if it is the air that expanded, then the air would come out through the hole, rather than the liquid. Although the syllabus does teach that all matter can expand when heated, she is not aware that air expands more than liquid.

Sounds like the MCQ is tricky with a lot of close answers! Probably it is deceptively easy and not really easy.

In which case those who took it at face value and came out announcing very easy could be in trouble[/quote]What an interesting comment! What trouble would they have? Arrested by police? Reprimanded by school principals?

I have mentioned earlier what the MOE simulation is unable to determine is the overall performance of P6 cohort result and secondary schools selection. However that will not distort or change the fact that AL17 COP will cover t-score equivalent of around 225 to 190.

The fact that AL17 can be achieve through AL 2 + 3 + 6 + 6, a student will be able to \"fail\" 2 subjects and still make it through. However under T-score, that will not be possible. For example COP for MGS express affiliation is around 220 to 223 and passing mark was 50. But under AL system MGS could end up taking in student with PSLE as low as 190. (For comparison sake, 188 is the COP of the most unpopular secondary schools in Singapore). That to me is mind boggling.

T-scores are individual scores derive from raw score while ALs are grouping of individual raw scores. And since traditional COP is determine by t-score, one will have no choice by to related AL COP to t-score to better understand how AL will affect the in take or balloting risk.

For goodness sake, pls don’t make it sound as if the whole school is filled with AL17 students and the school’s standard will be pulled down by accepting them. Take a look at both the upper and lower bounds

SCGS as well as MGS, their indicative COPs are at AL17. Take SCGS for example, it takes in about 160 O-level students per year. Let’s say 80% are affiliated students, that’s 128 of them. MOE website stated their tscores ranged from AL8 to AL17, that’s 10 bands. So 128 affiliated students spread across 10 bands, it’s around 12 students in each band.

I don’t understand why the need to harp on the 12 students who entered with AL17 and write in a manner to complete navet the perception that the whole school is filled with 100% AL17 students!

Moreover, it is exactly the intention of the AL system - to make the differences among schools obscure. Whether you like it or not, it is going to happen. 10 years later, parents will no longer be obsessive in sending their kids to elite schools like MGS. Instead, they may choose schools like Crescent girls or Nan Hua high because these schools are considered similar in standard (or at least less marked compared with today) . I think it is a good move.

Since AL5 is 65-74, If the COP is AL20, it is potentially a student who scored 74 in all 4 subjects balloting with a student who scored 65 in all 4 subjects. Honestly not something easy to accept if you are the higher scoring student.
How about if you are the lower scoring student?

If financially comfortable, better to seek 2nd or even 3rd opinion before making important decision such as surgery. Word of mouth is still most widely used.

    • RE: Q&A - P5 English

Hi Cool Nurse, I appreciate your detailed explanation.

Why is 'rarely' considered 'negative'? I thought rarely, similar to frequently, usually, sometimes, occasionally..., is merely a measure of frequency. If we replace 'rarely' by 'sometimes' in the question, would the answer be 'do' or 'don't'?

      Thank you once again 🙂
