suecat:During my time, we were also deciding between BPGHS and NHH. My DS choose NHH because it is fully air-con. all classrooms and school hall. We choose NHH because it is a SAP school. With the chinese environment, hopefully he can do better in HCL. I just want my DS to pass his HCL so as to get the important 2 bonus points for admission to JC and also he need not do chinese in JC, one subject less.Hi, went to visit the school on sat. Checked out the nearest bus stop too. There are 2 nearest bus stop. One of them along church of holy cross with buses like 96, 151, 183. The other one at the aye has bus service 963 ( sorry didn't take note of the rest). Students can walk through some hdb block to reach the bus stop. It takes about 10 min I think but if you need to cross over the bridge then prob add 5 more. It s not sheltered though. The teacher on duty said that a lot of students walk in from clement bus interchange and takes about 15 mins. Hopefully there will be a feeder bus soon as the bto next to it seems completed , however the road looks a bit narrow though. School starts at 7.25am.ngbrdad:For Nan Hua, nearest bus stop is either on AYE or Commonweanlth Ave West right ?
Which way is nearer to walk in ? and how long does it take to walk to NH ?
And what time does the school start daily ?
You considering this for your ds? I m also having a headache with this. Dd prefer this school because 2 of her friends choose this to and the classrooms are fully air conditioned. I prefer Bpghs due to the distance and that it s a band 1 school as compared to nan hua ( band 2) But nan hua is all express and heard from a friend's daughter that almost thevwhole of sec 3 except for 1 or 2 classes are doing triple science as compared to bpghs with only the best 2 classes doing triple science.( she s from bpghs).
Really can't decide and therefore have not submit the choices yet.
What do you think?

RE: Nan Hua High School
kkmom:
answer to your questions:I have a child going to NHHS, have some queries, hope to get some help here. Thank you.
1) Are all the books on Sec 1 booklist compulsory to buy? Eg. Atlas (Geography), dictionary, poster colours, etc.
2) Must all students wear school socks, or can wear white socks without school name?
3) Are you/ your child in the tablet PC class? Any benefits or disadvantages?
4) Do you/ your child find the school curriculum very stressful?
:thankyou:
1) No it is not compulsory, buy what is required. But the Alas is needed.
2) No, you can buy white socks outside.
3) No, depending on demand, usually 2 classes. I don't see the benefits, the school will give a briefing in DEC. Hear the talk before deciding.
4) No, with the COP of about 243, most kids should be able to cope. -
RE: Chinese impt in secondary level?
S-H:
For my DS case, he is still in the same class. But for HCL, it is split into 2 class. 22 students take the normal HCL. 18 student take the \"\" upgraded HCL class\", this class will get the special guidance from teacher.Hi computerkid,
My ds will be put to another class taking HCL. That's another reason why my ds is against taking HCL bcos he has made quite a no. of good friends in this present class. We are also afraid that he cannot cope with it so we may ask him to continue with CL instead of HCL.
The HOD CL has given us assurance that they will continue to monitor the progress, if by sec 2, the kid cannot cope. They will go back to CL .
If your DS school just put him together with the rest of the class taking HCL all along. All of them has been taking HCL since primary school. I would think it is very stressful for your DS. -
RE: Chinese impt in secondary level?
S-H:
Hi S-H,Hi INNOVATE,
I need one more advise fm you. My ds is in sec 1 and is taking CL. Bcos of his good result, he is given a chance to take HCL in sec 2. However, from what we see, his standard of chinese is only average, he is more powerful in his English. I'm aftraid that he will be pressurised if he take up HCL in sec 2. DS also me that he doesn't hv much confident too. We are in a dilemma. He is to give the teacher the answer not later than 25/10/2010. Hope you can give me some advice. Thanks.
Your DS situation is quite similiar to my DS. My DS only took CL in PSLE. In the beginning of the year, the HOD CL held a dialogue seesion with the parent of kid taking only CL. We were told that the school \"\" Strongly advise us to change to HCL\"\". Because it is a SAP school.
HOD explain he will form a special class for the kids. The CL teacher is very good, he explain to us his approach. He will gradually move the student to HCL progressively. So this class do not join the normal HCL class.
The teacher is very motivating and my DS enjoy his class and coping well. By Mid year, he has been \"\"promoted to the normal HCL class\" his EOY exam for HCL is not excellant but coping well. And of course we arrange tuition for him.
My opinion is, what is the school approach for your DS. If they just put him together with the rest of the HCL class. Then I think it is very difficult for your DS to cope. Because HCL is very much more difficult then CL. Maybe you should have a chat with the CL teacher on this. -
RE: Dilemma - Mixed Secondary School or Single Gender one?
PSLEmom:
After reading through the comments about student attitude problems in Single Gender Schools (Boys only or Girls only), really confused where to send my 2011 Secondary 1 child???????? :? Am an Expat Mom, born & brought up overseas.....Seeking your advice on Survival Skills in the Secondary schools!
Please Help!
Hi PSLEmom,
Just like to share with you my personal opinion. By now you should have the booklet given by MOE, the schools and their cut of points are listed.
Go through the list, and short list a few you are interested in. Make a point to find out the dates of the Open House. There is a forum on this.
Go to the web site of the school and find out more about the school.
Especially in the CCA portion. If your child is particularly keen in certain CCA, example Infocomm. Make sure the school you select offer that CCA.
If your child has special talent, then go for the specialised schools like SOTA and sport school
If you prefer the IP through train then select the schools that offer IP programmes.
If you want your child to have a good fountation in chinese and chinese culture then select a SAP school.
and next which is equally important, select a school relatively near your home to cut down travel time.
And extremely important, do not force upon your child, bring your child to the open house and your kid must be comfortable with the school. Usually the principal will make a speech, this will give you a better idea of the school.
I did not put single or mixed school in my selection criteria. -

RE: Home alone
softcoach:
My 2 girls (P5 & P4) are currently in a Student Care centre near their school. I am thinking of pulling them out and leaving them alone at home after their exams in Oct/Nov. We do not have a maid or any other help to look after them. Appreciate any advice on how I can help my girls get ready to be alone and independant. They have been in a BASC since N2.
Hi Softcoach,
Just wanted to share with you my experience. Because both parents working and we decided against maid. I put my child in PCF student care since Primary 1. But by the time DS is in Primary 6, he wanted more independence. Many times during school holidays and especially after PSLE, he would rather stay at home on his own. Sometimes request to go to friends place nearby.
I believed many parents also faced the same situation. By the time they reached Primary 6, your kid doen't want to be in student care any more. They think they are old enough to take care of themselves.
My DS is totally against installing camera at home. By the time they are Primary 6 to Secondary 1 they are very sensitive and have a mind of their own.
By the time my DS is in Sec one in a SAP school. His normal school hours end at 2.30pm. Except Wed 1.30pm. His CCA two times per week, up to about 6.30pm. Sometimes he has CIP, remedial class, enrichment class etc. Stay back to do project work.
He takes an hour to reach home, plus shower, take lunch.
Do his homework. Then take a rest. By this time we are home already.
At night we will guide him if he needs help with his homework.
Secondary school is very different from Primary school. School hours are long with many homework plus project work. Looking at the schedule, your kid will not have much time after school. -
RE: Secondary School CCA
usaik:
Hi Usaik,Hi,
Just wondering whether if a child is interested to join say, the school band, must he/she be already been a band member in primary school before they admit the child when they are in Sec or IP school?
I do not know how things are done in other school, but in my kid school. The HOD has explained to my kid and a separate session to parents on the selection criteria. Having joined a similair CCA in primary school is not good enough. They are looking for talents. So you must have awards and achievements. For popular CCA like InfoComm, Innovation, Robotics, you must win in competition. Same for sports, represent school and win. For performing Arts like band the criteria is minimum grade 2.
HOD said anything less than Grade 2, don't bother to apply. And they will conduct auditions. So it is very competitive.
And if your kid do not have any of the above, the school will allocate him the less popular CCA. The problem is, your kid might not like the CCA. And worse, your kid hate the allocated CCA.
Example some kid just hate uniform group. Or to Dance club.
hope i answer you question -

julongmum:
Hi julongmun, need advise from parents . my kid complainting not enough time for meal. Only half an hour for recess, lunch and between 2.30 to3.00 before their CCA. I dare not ask him to buy things from the bookshop because after queing up, he has no time to eat. Yesterday I was shock that he did not eat at all. Skip meal during recess, told me assembly took up their lunch period. Teacher conducted remedial lesson after school 2.30 to 3.00. After that 3 to 6pm CCA. He came home exhausted, hungry. and need to do homework till 10.30pm until I ask him to sleep.Hi computerkid, this is your 1st post in KSP, a big welcome to the family (KSP & NHHS).
Yes, many of us also felt the same way initially, however, are now happy seeng kids settling well in NH. DD came back and told me abt å¼åč§- this was mentioned in one of the culture talk. I didn't even know what's that! pai seh
I am sure the problem is not unique to him. CCA, enrichment, remedial lesson and so on is common to all students. How are your kid coping -

Hi,Hi julongmum
My daughter stay put in Nan Hua, she didn't get into RV, after school started 1 week, she was settling down well and since we still receive no new from RV, we have decided to stay in Nan Hua, now she is happy and
enjoying school, by the way, my dd is in 102, any parents there?
I am new to this forum. I too wanted my son to be in RV which is very near to our house. Not only avoiding \"O\" level. Now all the top JC are IP. NJC, HCI, RJC etc. That will leave very few selection for our 'O\" level graduates. Since he is in Nan Hua now, I decided to move on, and concentrate on what Nan Hua can provide. I particularly like the Chinese culture appreciation Prog where he get to learn calligragphy, painting and chinese medicine. He is in class 101. So far he is enjoying himself, happy that the school allow handphone. Though complainting tired unlike Pri school half day. He is selected for Symphonic Band and today is the first lesson. By the way, The Parent Support group has organised a welcome tea for parents this Sat.
