    • RE: Can configure wireless router to restrict wifi access?

      BigDevil:
There are some software which allows you to restrict

      internet access.

K9 Web Protection is available for both Windows and Mac machines
      http://www1.k9webprotection.com/

Qustodio is another one which can be installed on mobile devices as well,
but you will need to pay for the premium service if you want to
      use it on multiple devices.
      https://www.qustodio.com/en/
Thank you for your feedback. Will study the software on its suitability on my son's Mac (need to wait for him to sleep first btw before implementing this software) :censored: 😂

Hi folks, just like to add that you could take another step to configure your router with a family friendly DNS server.

Just need to set your primary and secondary name servers to:

      208.67.222.123
      208.67.220.123

More details can be found here:

      https://www.opendns.com/setupguide/?url=familyshield

In a nutshell, these name servers are pre-configured to block adult contents, set it once and forget it.

I've been using it for years, and its pretty fast and reliable, provided by a reputable company.
Thank you very much for your feedback. I followed your advice on exploring OpenDNS and I found many interesting articles/threads related to this issue. I'm currently learning which solution is the best for my case, beside putting further restriction on OpenDNS as per your advice.

Additional to the first question, my son is smart enough to know that router setting can be reset by pressing the hardware reset button normally available on any router hardware. I will have my new SingTel's Arcadyan 1900AC router in one week time so I need to know how to protect the access into it.

Are there any effective solutions to this problem? Any thoughts on the following possible solutions:
      a. The router is locked in a cabinet. Problem is: its signal may not be strong enough for all rooms.
      b. The router is connected to a managed switch while the switch is locked in a cabinet. Problem is: the switch cannot be managed via wireless (so that my son will know how to 'push' the parents to unlock the access)
      c. The router is connected to some access point terminals (APs) while the router can be locked in a cabinet. Problem is: I don't know whether Arcadyan 1900AC router can be connected to APs.

I welcome any feedbacks. Thank you very much in advance.

Protecting the router physically sounds extreme. Have you thought about adding your son's Microsoft account as a child account, so when he logs in with his computer, you can set all kinds of restrictions, from type of apps and websites allowed, to the time he gets to spend on his computer. Of course, this works only on Windows computers. For mobile phones, give him an iPhone. It allows for much stronger family control mechanisms. Never give him an Android phone if you want to control his mobile usage behavior.

      Hello ChiefKiasu,

      thanks for your feedback.

I have two laptops used by two different sons: one is MacBook and one is Windows-based laptop. My intention is to limit the surfing/gaming time by a predefined timing and/or duration. I have no problem with Windows-based laptop as I can protect it very well and my protection does limit his (my 2nd son's) access to the laptop.

However, I have an issue with my 1st son with his MacBook. He is smart enough to know how to hack/reset the admin account or is able to create a second admin account. My knowledge of Apple OS is not good enough to overcome this issue. I cannot change his MacBook as it is used as a learning device at his school. So, many times I have no control over his behavior to access internet beyond our family's internet timing rule and his behavior attracts my 2nd son to be with him playing internet-based game. In general, they do not access adult websites (at least as far as I know using several kinds of monitoring methods), but their gaming addiction is out of control. It left me with the choice to have protection on router level.

For mobile phone, I take your advice seriously. Thank you for this feedback. In case you have some hints on how to protect MacBook, I welcome any thoughts. Thank you again.

    • RE: DSA 2014

      Hello Everybody,

Sorry for asking this question, but somehow I lost RI information sheet so I need your help.

Can anybody share with me by when the RI DSA posting result for GEP student will be announced? :?:

If I remember correctly, it shall be by end of Aug 2014; however, I am not sure about the date. My current problem is that I need to travel overseas for several weeks/months during the period, so I need to know more information about it. Any other information following the successful DSA posting result (e.g. parents invitation for offer acceptance, etc.) will be highly appreciated as I need to properly plan it for returning to Singapore.

      Thanks a lot!
