Does HCL students take their Sec 3 O Level Chinese in mid year or year end to decide if they can proceed to HCL in Sec 4? I see that it is mid year in the older threads, my DD tells me it is year end.

\"not compulsory\" or \"not wanting to take\"? It is different. I am getting a strong impression that some schools are \"choosing\" better students to meet their KPI and not \"wasting\" time on nurturing students for bilingualism. If the schools take the students if they are keen to learn HMT, end of the day, if the student can opt out if feeling that they cannot cope, is different vs from the start, you need to take a test to \"meet the mark\" to take HMT in sec 1. Means if the kid does not do well for the school \"test\", (and it is holidays now and the test is on 26 Dec right after xmas day), no more HMT.

The kid does not have a say in the interest in HMT but the decision lies in the KPI of the school.

You are putting it too absolute! If your child is willing to and have potential for HMT, schools can still allow switch to HMT. (Just that whether your child is able to adapt to it.) btw I was also one if those who took the test in sec 2 to take HMT by will last time(I was barred from taking HMT fr lower sec coz my P5 CL tcher forced me to drop and I didt make it for the entry test in sec1). My CL teacher is the one that helped me in adapting to HMT before I took the test again.

The point here is whether is your child willing to take the additional challenge of improving his or her language. The teachers are more than willing to help students that are self-motivated to learn.

Friend, work towards solutions for a common goal, not to just going rigid over the guidelines and criticise it won't change the case! No matter what you and ur child are still stakeholders of the school ur child is enrolled in.

How many of your kind made it back to HMT? Why make it so hard if the intend is to educate? Anyway, it is my frank opinion of the school and you have yours. Each will have an impression of the decision made by the schools which we all have to respect. Time will tell, parents and students will know which school is more sincere from the first impression. Damage service recovery is tough. Cheers.

The following SAP schools (O Level stream), higher chinese is not compulsory for lower sec. It's depend on students' interest and results
      - nan chiau, anglician high, maris stella, chij st nick.

      Wonder what about nan hua?

Agree totally with you. That is my thought too. I cannot see the rationale of chinese SAP schools requiring the students to take a test to take HMT to have more barriers to promote HMT and the chinese culture.

      MyPillow:
Promoting MT culture Is a SAP sch programme .
The BIG plus point of SAP sch is full 7 to 9 classes of EXPRESS students - ( as a parent point of view, i personally prefer it 🙂

    • RE: HMT in SAP schools

By the virtue of fact, Nan Hua is a Chinese school claiming to promote bilingualism in the open house speech with all students taking mandarin during PSLE.

I will not have the same thinking for English schools like Maris, CHIJ St Nic, HMT is not mandatory as there is a good mixture of good non Chinese students.

It is sad to know this but seems so where most IP and SAP schools are trying to promote bilingualism, Nan Chiau High is focusing on results and better students.

      Thanks.
      [quote=\"grow and glow\"]Hi Dt
If I were you, I'll also choose CCHMS.

CCHMS policy spells one thing. That is, the school is nurturing enough to give more students the chance to do HMT.

Nan Chiau policy of having a test spells another. That is, if you have no strong background, then don't do HMT because the school doesn't want to do more work in teaching you.

Nan chiau is not the only one SAP school to create barriers for doing HMT.
It's really a shame that these so called SAP schools are trying to do less work. Some neighbourhood schools are willing to give HMT too.

CCHMS really deserves our respect. They are more nurturing.

    • RE: Chung Cheng High (Main)

I went to Nan Chiau and the same thing applies. What is going on with some of the SAP schools? Only taking in the best and not even considering educating the children within the school?

Hi. What happen to CCH students who are unable to cope with HCL? Do they get to take Chinese as 2nd language?

Unless you want to consider nearby Anglican High? This sch is on the other extreme. I went to its open house. To do HCL, students must pass a diagnostic test??!! :whut: Isnt this telling parents he school discourages HCL? To think this is Chinese background school too. :scared:
