Hi, i would need advice and recommendation as well.
My daughter started out violin lessons at UE square under this school called Virtuosi Music Centre (2016) heard it's very much popular among Japanese expats living in Singapore. She studied under this teacher called Ms Aya Fujise. she was very happy every lessons, and always recieve compliments and small presents from her teacher as well. after one year Ms Aya recommended us to buy a new violin which costs about 2.6k for 1/2 size. she told me was a brand that the school virtuosi music centre that has been selling! my daughter has been enjoying the lessons so we agreed to buy. after 2 years, we had to pause/ stop our lessons with them because of school work and we cant commit to weekend anymore.
recently my daughter decided to pick it up, i bought the violin to one of the violin shops in singapore for a service! They told me the violin is only worth 200 /300 dollars. and advice me to just buy a brand new one instead of reparing and remake a new bridge for the violin.
and soon slowly, my wife went to ask around her colleagues and their friends, found out that a 2 year on violin, we should have at least a grade 2/ 3 out of the grade8 system. but my daughter isnt anywhere near it after 2 years. but we felt it was okay, because she enjoyed lessons from Ms Aya before her PSLE.
What shocked us was that one parent actually came to us, and said \" have you seen your daughter teacher holding violin or playing ? \" and i asked my daughter and she said not that she has seen Ms Aya performing or demonstrating. and then she told us that she knows the local music scene pretty well. and Ms Aya from Virtuosi Music Centre is actually NOT a musician. she is not trained in anyway and she studies something else such as business or IT. she does not know how to play a piece, nor perform on the violin at all. and she is just being nice to little kids and makes them happy. AND WE HAVE PAID FOR 2 YEARS $60 / 30mins. and during school holidays she told us that our daughter needs full hour that costs us $120/hour.
now that makes me feel silly. i tried calling the school recently to check and was told she was no longer teaching there but at other music school in singapore. i asked the person behind the phone if she knows about it, all i recieved was just not sure, and sorry she was rushing off!
there is probably nothing i can do, but now my daughter does not really seem to sound any better but just likes the companion and lessons from Ms Aya, but i am struggling to tell her the truth and asks her to find a better qualified teacher that is worth our dollars and cents.
with the damaged violin, i can't even resell it on carousel to cheat other people over 2 grand for it when its actual worth was 200/300 dollars according to Synwin.
feeling cheated by Foreign Talents and wondering how she get her Pass to Singapore and work as violin teacher !!
was recommended to go UE square WOlfgang, but my daughter will then remember the VMC school which i would like her to just move on!
Please any advice or recommendations !
Will you consider having private classes at home or the teacher's place. You may want to check out https://www.sgmusiclessons.com.sg/. There is a good list of violin teachers that you can choose from. You can view their profiles on the website and choose according to your preference in terms of qualifications or experience. My friends had found good teachers from the website for their children's clarinet, piano and violin lessons. -
RE: All About Choosing Piano Schools And Teachers
A teacher with experience teaching young children will be very helpful. Most importantly is to generate the music interest for your girl. The delivery of the lesson should motivates your girl (e.g. through playing songs that she likes). I manage to find a good teacher through this website (http://www.sgmusiclessons.com.sg) for my boy. Browse through it to see if you find any teachers who may look suitable for your girl. Good Luck!
