      @bbbay said in It is worth the effort to take JC H1 subject seriously solely for the sake of scoring for A level?:

      I take the liberty to work out another scenario when H1 score much better than all other subjects.

      3H2 + GP, H1 (contrasting subject, optional in RP calculation)

      Scenario 5
      DDDD, A

      exclude optional H1: 12.5+12.5+12.5+6.25‎ = 43.75

      Include optional H1: ((12.5+12.5+12.5+6.25+10)/80)*70‎ = 47.0313

      Include option H1 does improve RP by 3.28

      While it does improve the score by a fair bit, you will find it a struggle to get into most courses. It will hardly make a difference to the courses you can choose.

    • RE: New L1R4 system for JC entry

      @bbbay

      While the need to score well in the subjects that matter doesn’t change, a 7-subjects combo (L1R4 + 2 back up) is way less stressful than a 8-subjects combo (L1R5 + 2 back up).

      For L1R5, students are effectively required to do well in both subjects in 2 of the following categories: maths, sciences or humanities, especially if their mother tongue is weak. Hence, the popularity of 2 language, 2 maths, 2 science and 2 humanities combo.

      With L1R4, you are only required to do well in 1 subject from the categories if your MT is good, or both subjects in only 1 of the categories if your MT is weak. That’s more ‘doable’ for a lot of students.

      P/S: L1R4 will further reduce the incentive of doing a triple science combo 🙂

      Hi floppy, thank you for your reply. Then in this case, can the boy go ns at 17yo (assuming he was born in Dec) after he completes his 1yr foundation course?
      I have men serving NS at 16+, just short of their 17th birthday.

      Minimum age is 16.5yo, with parental consent.

      A few weeks ago, i saw a parent post on FB a review of NYGH open house. I found it interesting that they are introducing a new DSA domain this year: Lion Dance. It seems they are forming the first female Lion Dance CCA troupe in sg. No idea who qualifies though.

      If you have background or experience in Lion Dance, you will probably qualify. Quite a number of girls participate in the activity, usually via 武馆 or 武术队, outside of school.

      I don’t think there are many other platforms. You can gather some info on Facebook, Rednote or “support groups” in school. This forum used to be active but I guess the format change has put off quite a lot of people.

      Good luck to your DSA application. May I know in which talent area?

      Direct School Admission (DSA-Sec): Application will start in about a month’s time - 11am on Tuesday, 7 May 2024 to 3pm on Monday, 3 Jun 2024.

      Start exploring the school choices and after shortlisting, use MOE’s application template to help you prepare the relevant information together with your child, before starting the online application.

    • RE: It is worth the effort to take JC H1 subject seriously solely for the sake of scoring for A level?

      In some exceptional cases, a H1 subject will improve scoring for A Level in the new system, but realistically, it won’t. A student will need to do much, much better for H1 compared to the rest of the subjects for it to make a difference in the RP. If that happens, it’s likely that the student did not have a high enough RP in the first place.

      An average student is better off focusing on the other subjects than spending time on H1 sorely for the sake of scoring for A Level. It’s deja vu - a return to the time where we all take 4 subjects for J1 and then drop to 3 subjects for J2 because it’s better to score 3A than 2A2B 😁

      One of my kids took Phy, Maths Econs, History. So yes it is still classed as a Science stream offering - once you take a H2 Science, you are classed as a Science student in JC.

      This is probably the only “science” combo in JC that a O Level student with background in 1 science and 1 math can take. Unfortunately, not many alternatives if die die want to go JC.

      Seems like JC either needs to dumb down the current syllabus or qualifying criteria or do away with science or arts stream to cater to the masses with this new L1R4 requirements. Perhaps also bring back commerce stream and make MI a regular JC again with 2-year track?

      Our education system is designed like building blocks. Hence, removing / moving one block will inevitably affect the rest of the chain. 牵一发而动全身, I won’t be surprised if this isn’t the end of the changes before the next next GE 😀

      @Imp75 @zac-s-mum

      Realistically, anyone who is taking only E math and 1 science subject is not suitable for the JC science stream, unless the student is prepared to put in double hard work. 6 subjects combo is possible only if the student is ok to take Econs as one of the 4 subjects in JC (science, math, economics, humanities). Not sure if that’s a “normal” subject offering in JC.

      Admitted foreigners on scholarships or not, are a few notch higher in capabilities than citizens in the same course plus they have to work 3 yrs in Singapore. I can only hope among them, one will start a new company in future that employ 100 Singaporeans with decent paying jobs; another one will create an AI model the detect disease earlier to benefit Singaporeans first.

      My foreign scholar classmate is a respected Prof in NUS teaching and, hopefully, discovering a breakthrough in his field of work. May not have employ 100 Singaporeans but I’m sure he has taught / trained more than 100 Singaporeans 😬
