    • RE: All About ADHD : Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Hi. I'm looking for recommendations for psychiatrist for treatment of ADHD.

A bit of background info. My son is in Sec 1 this year. I noticed he was frequently inattentive and lost focus while coaching him for PSLE. He had no improvement in his grades form P5 to PSLE. Post PSLE , I brought him to a private psychologist for formal assessment and ADHD - ADD predominant was diagnosed.
He does not have any hyperactive symptoms and was not suspected to have ADHD by school teachers, preschool teachers etc. His scored very highly in the IQ components and psychotherapist feels this is the reason why his ADHD was not picked up earlier.
He is in express stream without having had any extra allowances for ADHD in PSLE exams.
I find that although he is motivated to study and do well, he has significant anxiety issues and he has great difficulty overcoming his inattention and loss of focus. He has been going for psychotherapy and I plan to continue it but it has helped about 10-20% only.
I have talked to my son about his condition but he is keen to take medications if it can help him focus better.
Hence I am seeking recommendations for a private psychiatrist. If you have had a good experience with any psychiatrist, please let me know. Thanks in advance.
      :thankyou:

    • RE: Anglo-Chinese School (Independent)

Hi Everyone. Can I find out how many classes are there for the O level track? Are there 40 students in a class or less since this is an independent school? My advanced thanks for your replies.

In addition what are the examinable subjects taught at Sec 1. I heard that this varies for non core subjects.

    • RE: Mother Tongue Language - B (MTL-B)

Does anyone know what is the new criteria for taking "B" MTL in Sec 1? In terms of AL score - is it 6 and below?

I am also interested in finding out if DS/DD takes "B" MTL, will they be required to do MTL in JC? Since those who do MTL at O level are required to do MTL at AO level in JC 1.
Thanks in advance for your help.

    • RE: IP, IB vs A Levels

Is a second language absolutely required for the IB program? The A levels do not seem to require it. It’s done in the first year of JC at AO level or can be stopped after O level if "B" language is chosen. Am I correct?

My DS is weak in Mother tongue, so I’m hesitant to opt for IB.

While decluttering, I found this book. This book helps to give me a guide to where I am in terms of supporting my children at Primary School.

Sorry I only read this book and hence cannot comment about other books in the market. All I can say is this book gives me an insight on how I should start.

For those who do not know how to create a home study plan. This book is great.

For those whose kids are still struggling at end of P5. Still got time. Because in this book, the author's daughter is as such.

A* and A: How I Helped My Child Score In The PSLE by See Jaik Yong (with a foreword by Carmee Lim, former principal of RGS)
I can't find this book in any local bookstore now. Is it out of print? The authors website appers to be quite outdated and it says the book is available in Popular and Times bookstore. Unfortunately, I searched in both and could not find the book.

Just to confirm, apart form EL, 2 Maths/Science and 1 Humanities, the other 2 subjects cannot be Maths or Science? :scratchhead:
What about Students who take 2 Science, 2 Maths, 1 Humanities, EL, MT - as 7 subjects for O levels?

The R5 is one maths, one science, one humanities, and any other 2 subjects.
So for your example, the other 2 subjects can be the other maths, the other science, or MT.
Actually I think L1R5 has been around for at least 3 decades?

Thanks. I'm 40+ 😓 . In my time the 6 subjects must include MTL. There was no B MTL. There was also no IP programme.
HMT was in its' infancy ( just started being offered to top 5% of each cohort only as there was no foundation or HMT in primary level). O level 6 subjects must include - English, MTL, any Math, any science, any humanities( there were no combined humanities). The 6th can be any subject. So the grading was a lot tougher. Most express students took 9 subjects. Top students took 10 subjects. Weaker students took 8. Compared to the 6 to 8 subjects now. The variety of subjects offerred is also a lot more now. A lot of changes compared to my time. But the changes are good for current students.
